Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow Bassist

I'm listening to Blow By Blow for the first time in a few years. I'm really struck by how amazing the bass playing is on this album. Anyone know who the bass player is and where I can hear more of him? This is some really great stuff!

I didn't know Jeff played some bass on that....interesting. I always thought Phil played tastefully in the pocket on that record - nice tone too.

Says it right on the back of the album.

What really slays me is Richard Bailey's playing on that thing. He was a 17 or 18 year old drummer from Trinidad and he so _TOTALLY_ owns that album.

I agree. The whole band is amazing on that album. That is some of my favorite Jeff Beck playing too. Every note that everyone plays seems perfect for the moment.

Phil also played on some of the Rod Stewart albums. Here's something i found.
Chen joined Rod Stewart's band full-time, as he played on such hit albums as 1977's Foot Loose Fancy Free (for which Chen earned a co-writing credit for the track "You're Insane"), 1978's Blondes Have More Fun, and 1980's Foolish Behaviour, and toured the world with Stewart

Phil Chen. Great player! I always wonder what he thought of playing "Every Picture Tells A Story" with Rod Stewart. That song has one line that I think Phil would find pretty offensive.

You will probably be getting a visit from one(1) Bruce Lindfield.

I still recall the day I 1st heard this album (a Saturday in 1975, roughly noon-ish)...the older brother of my friend (the 'self-proclaimed Clapton down-the-street') bought it that morning, played the 1st 2-3 tracks...and then kicked us out because he needed to hear this record alone.

I do recall the 1st track blowing me away...WTH? The bass doesn't have to play on "1"?!?!
Chen's playing on BBB was like an early bible of Funk-Rock for me.

Chen wasn't on that album (Ron Wood played much of the bass)...unless you're talking about playing the tune in concert w/ Stewart.
FWIW, I'm not sure of the lyrical content so I'm in the dark...

Well, I don't think that Beck played any bass on that album. According to an interview Max Middleton said that the band did record live with Beck recording his guitar later. Max Middleton played bass (on Moog) on Diamond Dust. Also nice production by Sir George Martin. Chen was nice on the album, he didn't any of the following tour though (neither did Richard Bailey). He was replaced by Wilbur Bascomb (who played on Wired) for the tour. Bailey, Middleton and Bascomb were reunited in Mick Taylor's backing band many years later. Chen also was involved in Brian May's "Star Fleet" project after being with Rod Stewart, I remember seeing him on some cover pics (EVH was also involved). I think he recently was (maybe still is) part of the "Doors" reunion. I think Chen also played on the George Martin-produced Sgt. Pepper soundtrack from 1978 (including Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees). The backing band on most songs were Middleton, Bascomb and Bernard Purdie (which were touring with Beck in 1975 for the BBB tour). I remember listening to 4 songs of the pre-Blow by Blow sessions on Carmine Appice's website who was to be the original drummer. Apparently some of what Appice did was adapted by Bailey. Bailey is still a great drummer, I like what he did on Max Middleton's "Another Sleeper" album.

Wow.

Wasn't Phil Chen born in Kingstown, Jamaica? That's what he claims in the interview on the SITSOM CD. He has a Jamaican accent also. What is he up to now? I'd love to check him out live. A silent legend in my book. The bass playing on BBB is dynamite and I always thought so even before I knew it was him.

A nod for Ron Wood. I like his bass work from back then.
