It looks like Jack Casady is playing a modified Jazz bass. Has anyone else seen this? Its a Jazz with both pickups and then some Pbass pickups installed.

Strangely enough, I was just trying to watch that on TV, but have had too many interruptions to look at it closely.

IIRC it has an added P-Bass p/u at the neck and for some reason the output jack has been moved to the upper hole in the control plate.

Yup, that was the bass he had before Yggdrasil (his first alembicized guild starfire II)
A friend of mine and I actually made a loose SX copy of it. Great sounds with the p bass pickup in the neck. I'll see if I can dig up the photo of that bass.

I met Jack Casady and he told me that he bought a Fender Jazz Bass in
1960 (the year they were introduced). He said he wished he had kept it.
He didn't indicate when he parted with it.

I'm no historian on basses but could that be a 1960 Jazz Bass?

Great pic! This must be real early, before the knee boots/headband look.

I just returned the “Outtakes” DVD to the library. There is a Jefferson Airplane tune on it, if your looking for less familiar views of his bass.

The most stunning band on the Outtakes is the Mamas and the Papas performance where the backing band , including Joe Osborn, has real trouble. The word is that the band and the singers spent very little time “getting their act together”. It shows what happens in live performances in this day of squeaky clean studio productions.
