Jerry Scheff on LA Woman

Listening to the great basslines on LA woman, I can't quite work out how he got that crunchy, growly sound. I'm tempted to say Jazz with some kind of roundwound strings and a tube amp, but would that come close? Something else maybe?

I assume it's a Jazz...not sure of anything else he may have used.
I do love his playing/sound on that album, though.
