It sounds like a very classic SVT tone to me, but I could be wrong. Anyway, with a pick and new strings I am able to get a very similar tone with my Sansamp RBI with both my Warwick thumb and my Peavey Cirrus.

Not sure what he was using amp-wise in the studio (if at all), but on the Holy Diver tour, he was using a Yamaha BB (1200?) with a P/J configuration. Great tone.

Yamaha BB-something with PJ and pick through Gallien-Krueger amps and cabs live. That's what I saw on Rock 'n' Rolll Tonight.

Zombie bump to note that I'm listening to this album and had to look up the bassist. Absolutely killer tone. Nothing too flashy in terms of playing, but rock solid throughout. Great grindy tone that fills out the otherwise limited arrangement nicely.

"Shame on the Night" is required listening for anyone who wants to know what metal bass tone should sound like. I understand Jimmy Bain gigged with G-K amps, but in recent years has been an endorser of Ashdown.

Yamaha BB 3000 basses and yes G-K amps, cabs those days. And picking over bridge pickup(of course). He is awesome solid and very underrated bassist. Always got "goose bumps" from he´s sound and playing. Long Live JIMMY BAIN!
Time,tone and taste.

RAINBOW!! RAINBOW!!!...........(now you know where I stand)...

Bain was the perfect bassist for Dio/Blackmore's bands, IMO...

...good solid chops without being too flashy...let the guitar-heros have the spotlight, just hold down a good solid bottom end. Won't get you "hero" status, but will make the song sound great...and that's the point, isn't it...?...

Holy Diver & Last in Line...2 of my favorites.

Thank you SEARCH function!!!!
I really dig that sound.
Now if I can get my (soon to be) modded GSR200 to sound at least close to it with my Nitrobass head and 412tvx!
Any suggestions?
What a great forum!!!!
Jeff

Years later!!! Last night at rehearsal using a Yamaha bb450 and a gk400 rb, nailed the jimmy Bain tone effortlessly.
