Any Jimmy Johnson fan out there?
Here in Italy he's not that famous, but I think he's really a terrific player, with outstanding timing, great groove and a beautiful tone...plus, his fills are always otstanding, and what a soloist he is!!
I listened to him on many recordings (Holdsworth, Ritenour, Grusin, Karizma, Planet X, James Taylor ecc...) and I'm always amazed by his musicianship!!

& Flim & The BB's! Incredible player. He's also one of the first 5 string bass players. I think he's got to be one of the best session players I've ever heard! He killed on every song he's ever played on, IMHO!

No doubt, although his live playing (e.g. IOU Live) is what really gets me.

There are a few threads on Jimmy if you do a search.

He's one of my favorites. The 'James Taylor Live' double CD with Jimmy and Carlos Vega, is IMO one of the great pop rhythm section performances of all time. The sound of that disc, and Jimmy's tone in particular, is really something!

And in fact Jimmy and Carlos play together on various recordings, one of the greatest rhythm sections...

+1 That pairing brings to mind the descriptions I use regarding bass amplification that I prefer: clean, accurate, precise, but still musical and 'not sterile'. Their playing is just perfect to my ear. I'm still very sad Carlos is no longer with us.

There is a Steve Gadd testimonial DVD out were Jimmy is the bandleader, they show some rehearsals and you can see how much some serious cats respect him.

Jimmy's awesome. That Alembic sounds awesome but it looks so uncomfortable; seems like very tight spacing and the horns are short, so it seems there is a far reach to the first position. And how heavy it looks.

Awesome, though. Kinda reminds me of Roscoe Beck and Dave LaRue - kinda the same generation of players. . . no?

Of all the Alembic players I'm aware of, Jimmy gets far and away the most pleasing tone to my ears. Hands down.

The Wayne Johnson CD's are great early Jimmy recordings too.
It seems like his voice has been developed from day 1, much like Marcus (obviously not playing like), where the first stuff they recorded is not far from the latest. And when JJ does those crazy multi-octave things, you know it can only be him.

One of my favorite CD's!!! I love anything he does with Holdsworth and also have every Planet X cd out there. Jimmy's one of my mentors when it comes to tone and styles. I also dig Tom Kennedy too but that's another thread.

Yep. that's one of the reasons I picked it up, that and I love Planet X. Jimmy's on the new one a lot too. I don't think Kennedy's on there though.
