Believe it or not, I've got a stock Carvin LB76 that gets me into that JJ tone space. It's an older one with the straight single coil J-styles. Piano-like, wide spectrum, and very even all over the range.

I respect so many bass players and stand in awe of folks like Vic Wooten, Adam Nitti, Jaco, Billy Sheehan, Bootsy Collins, and others....but to me, no one embodies the role of the bass player better than Jimmy Johnson.

Listening to him backup James Taylor's band is just magic. You FEEL what he's playing. It's never harsh, brash, or "in your face" yet you can here it in the mix and given a good sound system, you can feel it shaking your teeth out.

Oddly enough, James Taylor has also had another great bass player. Back in the early years, a guy named Lee Sklar played with him. Also a fantastic player.

As a long time lover of the bass, but a beginning player, my hope is to do what these guys do. Leave the flashy "look at me" antics to the guitar player. Just sit downstage, out of the spotlight, and lay down a deep groove that gets people's heads bouncing and feet tapping, and every now and then reach for that B string and tickle their nose hair a bit.
What you maybe fail to realize is that in order to play as this guys you must be on your way back so to speak wich is: Be able to do all the flashy stuff BUT choosing not to do it. There is no shortcut. A great bass-player has a great technique.

a verified monster. sorta like anthony jackson- a long distinguished career, world-class monster chops and a composer's head for solos and lines, but always in the service of the groove and the vibe.
jimmy needs some new buzz out in the bass world, i think- all kinda cats, myself included, should listen and learn afresh.

Jimmy Johnson with Billy Childs

I've just recently seen Jimmy Johnson play with Billy Childs' electric quartet (Bob Sheppard on saxes/flute and Joey Heredia on drums), which reprised the late-80s/early-90s material on Windham Hill and Stretch Records labels. This is amazing music -- like Herbie Hancock meets McCoy Tyner meets Keith Emerson meets Claude Debussy. I've always liked JJ's playing the most in this music. Have a listen to his playing under BC's solo in "His April Touch" or "Twilight Is Upon Us" (both from albums of the same name). Unreal.

That's a pin-point description, IMHO.
Years ago, I'm in the last cool record store in my neck of the woods...playing in the store is something that sounds like McCoy Tyner...but more electric (much more electric than Tyner's trio album w/ Marcus Miller). So I ask & I am told it's Billy Childs' His April Touch. IIRC, the tune was "Four By Five"...with Jimmy Johnson's laying down a phat one.

Interesting that you mentioned Hancock-
"Mount Olympus" from Childs' Twilight Is Upon Us is an homage to Hancock's "The Egg" (from Empyrean Isles).
