Jimmy Johnson!!! (with Allan Holdsworth and Chad Wackerman last night)

I saw this show last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. I had never seen Jimmy live, althought I've heard a lot of recordings. All I've got to say is that if you get a chance to catch this show, DO! Jimmy will rip your heart out, and swallow it whole! That guy can rip and what a sound!

Of course, Allan and Chad are always the awe inspiring musicians, but you always hear them ripping through their instruments on record and Jimmy usually takes the back seat. Not in this set up!

I bet that was a cool show.

Some of Holdsworth's stuff leaves me cold, but I still respect the man. Chad and Jimmy backing him up? That's just awesome. We're they playing as a 3 piece? Did they do anything off of I.O.U.?

Jimmy's playing on Allan's "Secrets" is fantastic.

Agreed! Jimmy 'Flim" Johnson is one of those bassists that a lot of his work goes unnoticed! His Flim & The BB's work is timeless! I'm still raving about his playing on Manhattan Transfer's Tonin' cd! It's pop music but dude puts it down! I also have an old Brandon Fields fusion cd that Jimmy is smokin' on! If I'm not mistaken, he was one of the first 5 string players!

yes, it was just the 3 of them and they played 2 tunes from IOU, secrets, road games and more ...they opened with a composition by Chad ...cool indeed.

Wow. How can Allen leave you cold? The guy's got more soul than just about any jazz/fusion guy out there. The thing I love about him is his sound, touch and feel never sound outdated. Not to diss anyone but listen to some 10 year old tribal tech and notice how "dated" the guitar tone is. Holdsworth's stuff is still fresh.

Johnson is the perfect match for those like Holdsworth & Wackerman.
I.O.U. Live is bad!
Don't forget Forty Reasons & The View by Wackerman for more.

Saw him play a year back with James Taylor...what an incredible player. I love his fretless stuff too...
