Joe Satriani equivalent on the bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Are there any solo bassists that are of an equivalent or similar style to Joe Satriani? While there are quite a few bassists that impress me with their abilities (Manring/Lawson/Schmidt), their specific styles aren't of the type that I could just put on the stereo in the background while doing something. I'm also not a big fan of the heavily percussive Wooten styles either.

Yeah, Billy Sheehan strikes me as a Satch type bassist.

I wouldn't say so. Satriani isn't a flashy player. Very technical but not flashy for the sake of it.
John Myung would be a better fit. Randy Coven maybe?

I recommend two bassists. The first is Trip Wamsley. He is the bassist for The Power Triplets; who I also recommend. I have his Album "Curve" and you can hear and order all three here: http://tripwamsley.bandcamp.com/

The other player I'd recommend is Adam Nitti. His web site is: http://adamnitti.com/wordpress

Not only is Adam a great bassist, but he's also a really cool guy. Which is just as important to me as talent.

Kinda agree on Billy, but I think he's more akin to Vai than Satch.

Entwistle wasn't flashy at all either.

Doug Wimbish. Utterly amazing, and hugely underrated. The guy can shred, and he only needs 4 strings (and a crapload of effects ). Behold:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qXNfNGQdSE
(about 3:30 in for the full shred-tastic experience)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDWwSQTD2LI
(note the Streamer Stage II instead of his usual orange Spector)

There's also some footage of him playing with Tarja Turunen (former Nightwish singer) on Youtube, where he takes a full-on shred solo.

+1 on Squarepusher. Tom Jenkinson's amazing. I thoroughly recommend anything off Just A Souvenir (particularly Delta-V and The Glass Road), Hello Everything (all of it) and Music Is Rotted One Note (again, all of it). Full of bassy goodness.

Sheehan fits, listen to the album Cosmic Troubadour. Like on most satch albums, the songs focus on the compositions much more than on technical skill.

Squarepusher works nicely too.
