| Joey DeMaio and EARLY Manowar

I said EARLY because I think Manowar have been goofs for some time. However, when I started playing in the metal days, Joey was a huge influence. The first four records especially. Most people knew his "William's Tale" or "Sting of the Bumblebee" solos, but I think the coolest stuff was early on for sure. Like the bass solo in "Fast Taker", or the intro to "Dark Avenger" on "Battle Hymns". "Blood of My Enemies" distorted tone and the power slides on "Each Dawn I DIe" and "Kill With Power" on "Hail to England".
And the odd tones and very creative "Thunderpick" and "Mountains" on "Sign of the Hammer". I really loved his pick tone and use of chords, and I still play a lot of stuff he inspired to this day. Cudos to them for sticking it out all these years, but they sure turned into boring commercial silliness for me a long time ago. I just miss the early metal in the 80's. Death to False Metal of course. |
