I just started listening to the Velvet Underground and I love John Cale's bass sound. So if possible I'd love some info on that.

I love the Velvet Underground. Hard to find any info on what kind of gear they used. But this here looks like a P-Bass.

And here's one where he's got a Vox Phantom.

I really like Doug Yule's bass playing and singing on "Loaded" as well.

IIRC, he played a Jazz bass (burgundy mist, maybe?) during the '93 reunion tour.

Don't have any idea of what he used, but count me in as one of his fans

I love the Velvet Underground one of my top bands. I think to achieve his tone a good ol' p bass with flats would do.

Good reason to stay on flats

The Vox Westminster shown on Cale's website looks a lot like the Vox bass amp I had back in high school four decades ago; mine had a similar tubular chromed wheeled cart, but I seem to recall that mine had an integrated head and cabinet, whereas the Westminster separated them. Talk about a trip down memory lane!

Here's a bass he commissioned from John Trussart (according to the auction FWTW).
