Hi all
Music Radar is celebrating Queen bass player John Deacon this week. Follow the link for the info. Bass Legends: Queen's John Deacon | MusicRadar.com
Such an underrated bass player and even though he is retired he is still an inspiration to me and was the reason I picked up the bass in the first place.
Enjoy

I play A to C: Doo doo DOO doo-doo, doo doo DOO doo-doo.
I am so proud of my doo-doo.
Maybe I should've had kids after all.
But anyway, Deacon's bass parts all have this sensibility to them, and they always grow and mature as the piece goes on.
I love that guy.

His iconic basslines all seem to be relatively simple ("Another One Bites the Dust", "Under Pressure"), but his lines in "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend" are both deliciously complex and subtle at the same time. He should be required listening for all bass players. Actually, Queen should be required listening for everybody at some point in their life (I contend to this day that Mercury was the best singer/front man ever)! |

| | | | Totally agree about Mercury as singer, and probably on front man. Deacon is a quiet monster lurking in the closet. Not so noticeable, but always lurking. Listened to Classic Queen and Greatest Hits earlier this week to and from work, and Deacon was amazing me. May has always been one of my favorite guitarists, just impeccable tone and note selection. Queen is so vastly underrated. |

Anyway, the guy was/is an incredible musician.

The guy wrote, arranged, sang, played an instrument or two, and provided the flamboyance in studio and on stage to live up to the band's moniker. A huge feat in popular music that few have achieved.

You can tell by listening he is definitely digging into it too. I had always assumed he played with a pretty light touch but that iso track tells me otherwise.

I could barely play bass, but this song made me sound like a virtuoso. It just has a great feel to it, and all great riffs.
It was the high point of my night for sure. Sadly, my wife stopped wanting to do it, and she was singing the lead vocal. I had enough trouble playing and singing backing vocals on this one; I can't see doing Freddie's lead vocal and playing that bass line.
Playing this song improved my bass playing drastically, in a very short time. (note: I was already a guitar player, keyboard player and singer, so the rhythms came naturally; all I needed was to learn the actual notes. I'm not saying my technique was good, but I did pull it off)
The little "de-bum-bum-bum" that carries the change into the second verse alone is just pure pleasure to the fingers and ears.
