His style is very unique, very difficult to replicate well. |

It is, however, worth seeing just for John's incredibly dry sense of humour, which goes totally over host Arlen Roth's head...
He does demonstrate his various picking techniques (including the "typewriter" technique) and a few other worthwhile bits of note though, so, educationally, it's not totally worthless. |

| | | | My old bass teacher encouraged me to learn as many of Entwistle's lines as possible, but threatened to beat my hands with his leather guitar strap if I ever copied Entwistle's left hand technique. My teacher always preached economy of motion, and The Ox always looked like he worked twice as hard as he had to. (Compare Stanley Clarke's or Jaco's left hand positions to Entwistle's.)
Still one of my favorite players, though.

Try a ukelele pick. Hard felt that works really well and easy to learn with. No pick sound. Kinda cool. |

| His tone was so much more than just that. The whole My Generation tone was constructed using Rotosounds, a Danelectro and using triplet technique where his fingers hovered over the fretboard and smashed the hell out of the strings.

He wanted a brighter tone, so went with the Danelectro baritone guitars, but he went through several of them during the recording session - every time he broke a string (frequently, apparently), he had to go out and get a whole new instrument, since the strings weren't available separately!
In the end, he just recorded the bass breaks with his Jazz Bass, flatwounds and a pick, in a somewhat simplified form.
His search for a brighter sound, and teaming up with Rotosounds to create the roundwound bass string stems from this incident. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
