John McVie tone on early Fleetwood Mac

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I'm currently playing with a blues band which throws a few covers into the mix. Fleetwood Mac/Peter Green is a favourite of the lead man, we play "Watch Out" and a couple of others.

At the minute I'm looking at a few heads/cabs at the local music store, the lead guy is suggesting to me I try to lean towards McVie's tone on early FM stuff, for example:

Anyone know what John was using at the time?

And yes, I know it's in mostly in the hands!!!!

Thanks in advance for any responses

Looks like perhaps a Jazz? There were but only a few amps in that era, so that one's in the air.

I am pretty sure he was uising Fender Jazz Basses and Fender amps as well... I spoke with my brother who saw them perform and he remembers stacks of only Fender amps...

On some of the album covers there are studio pix with Fender gear....

Slightly OT..in the 80"s I saw the band Squeeze several times and they had a wall of Fender amps behind them...all Fender guitars.. pretty awesome sounding

When I saw him the first time (much later than this, but Stevie Nicks still had black hair) he was using an SVT (when there was only one version, and it WAS really "Super Valve Technology", not the emasculated solid-state things with the fake SVT name on them..) with a single Ampeg SVT 8x10 cabinet.

And he alternated between a refinished old rosewood board Precision and an Alembic. Mr. Buckingham was playing mostly the white Les Paul, an Ovation, and a 'burst Strat for a few songs.

John
