To have the technical ability to play things like Dance Of Eternity and stuff, I think he's pretty freaking amazing.

Definitely one of the best rock bassists IMO.

I gotta say though, get ready to get flamed by massive amounts of people except for me and Suckbird (I think he likes DT.)

He was sounding real good on the Budokan DVD/CD IMO. LSFNY was darned good too. The ultimate was WDADRU.

awesome, listening to him got me to at least try to start a practice regimen (hour of scales and arpeggios, writing when I get time)

sound on all off the early stuff is freaking amazing, not a big fan of some of the newset stuff

I saw Dream Theater last year at the warfield. they did a 3 hour set or more. I was right in front of John Myung about 5-10 feet away. He's amazing to watch. I think he's a great bassist overall--one of the best. His tone live wasn't anything special but it wasn't bad.

interesting thing--he never seemed to make eye contact with the crowd or really acknowledge the crowd until the very end when they wave goodbye. At first I thought it was weird, but when I think about it, I think he is a humble guy and he focused on playing his bass rather than showing off.

I still don't understand why he plays a Yamaha bass--does anyone know why? Maybe just the endorsement deal?

anyway I think he's definitely one of the best.

I love the guy. Amazing player, nice (albiet shy) guy I've heard, and he's SERIOUS about the instrument. He's not like most rockers who'll go out there and drink before they get on and get nowhere near the talent they have on album. This guy will warm up before a show, and warm down.

His ultimate album tone IMO was Images & Wodrs, Awake, Falling Into Infinity, and Metropolis Pt. 2.

When I saw them live, he didn't have the best tone (I agree... no cabs + HEAPS of compression isn't the way to do it John) but his bass tone was audible and sounded heavy.

He plays Yamahas because they're good. They make what he asked for. The RBXJM2 is exactly what John asked for, a punchy alder-bodied 6 string that is light.

I just got his instructional video, but i haven't watched it yet.

I think they need to turn him up in the mix, otherwise it doesn't matter how cool of a bassline he's playing if you can't hear what's going on

btw, the only DT CDs i have are Images and Words, and Live at Budokan

Crap tone + crappy band + only really plays fast, even scales = I don't really care.

(coming from a former rabid DT fan)

I love DT and John Myung, and the time I saw them in Chicago, I actually liked Myung's tone the few times I could actually hear him.

Awful tone live? When I saw them a couple months ago his tone was sweet. It was a classy venue, but still.

I like him, he fits into the music very well.

i caught him at the biggest venue we have, Bell Centre, openning for Yes. Now Chris Squire...that was tone. Myung was muddy, burried in the mix and just sounding bad. Maybe cause they were openning and didnt get as much attention.

i haven't heard a whole lot of DT, but from what i have heard, it sounds like he has talent, I don't really feel anything with his playing, but that really more goes for my thoughts on that genre, so i don't think JM is to blame...but i won't argue...he has talent

Oh yeah? I was at that show and i found Squire's tone to be quite disappointing.

However, i've got to agree with Myung's tone which was pretty much inaudible.

I guess he goes through a DI and plays directly through PA.

There's a phrase to describe that. It's called: "being a real musician"...

I like him but DT sometimes goes off the "butt-rock" deep end a little too often for me. I won't buy anymore of their albums.
