How about Chuck Rainey playing bass on the Jackson 5 records? I'll guarantee you that wasn't Tito layin' it down!

That was Jermaine with the bass; Tito had the guitar.

I was just wondering recently whether Tito or Jermaine ever actually played their instruments, or if they were just props.

Kaye, TMK, did not play bass on "all" The Monkees' tunes...I have the cds with the extensive liner notes. Some tunes' musician credits are listed as "unknown".

The 1st album lists these bassists-
Larry Taylor
Bob West
William Pittman

More Of The Monkees
Carol Kaye: 3 tracks
Ray Pohlman
Larry Taylor
Russell Savakus
Larry Nechtel
Bob West

Headquarters
Chip Douglas...very McCartney-esque
Peter Tork
John London

The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees
Joe Osborne
Max Bennett
Red Callender
Richard Dey
Chip Douglas
Lyle Ritz
...and Buddy Miles even shows up on drums.

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones LTD
Chip Douglas
Larry Taylor

...didn't know about Rainey playing bass with the J-5 (no surprise, though)-
Guys like Jamerson ("Darling Dear"), Ron Brown, Wilton Felder ("I Want You Back") were some of the other heavies.

I never actually heard the J-5 live back then...their canned TV appearances? Jermaine is NOT playing what you hear coming outta your TV's speakers.

I guess you have to look at the whole process..you dont know who you will meet at a session and what type of connections you will make...meet a great engineer or producer etc...other musicians
maybe a tour might be offered... or another session....

Anybody who wants to pay me to play bass on their recording is overall a good thing....

As long as it doesn't conflict with another session, ANY ANY ANY session is a good session. Don't care what the music is. Get some bread, meet some people.

John probably had a bumber sticker that says " My Worst Day Doing Sessions, Is Better Than Your Best Day Working"

1. Maybe because he was available?
2. Maybe because "positive" exposure can be good for even the best of us?
3. Maybe because they're both Christians and she had a preference?
4. It was 1984 and John had not yet become a household name (his first personal recording appears to have come out in 1987 according to Wikipedia).

I never heard the album and wasn't a fan of Lisa's music, but the album wasn't a bomb. It apparently reached #17 on Billboard's Contemporary Christian Charts and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Inspirational Album. It actually had some heavy hitters in Christian music on the recording.

BTW, Leon Gaer, another fantastic bassist who appeared on Gino Vannelli's Brother to Brother album, also played on Lisa's album.

Credits on the album...
Lisa Whelchel: Vocals.
Marty Walsh: Guitars
Leon Gaer, John Patitucci: Bass
John Ferraro, Bob Wilson: Drums.
Brandon Fields: Woodwinds
Smitty Price, John Rosasco: Keyboards
Rhett Lawrence: Synthesizer Programming
Sandy Hall, Melissa MacKay, Susan McBride, Howard McCrary, Linda McCrary and Charity McCrary: Background vocals
Bobby Cotton: Producer

Brandon Fields is pretty well known, too...solo albums + a member of Weckl's band, etc.
I think I remember John Ferraro playing drums with Larry Carlton.

...and Gaer on Brother To Brother. Whew!

Lots of up and coming heavys in Christian music at that time on that album. Check out Marty Walsh's credits at www.martywalsh.com. Nah, these folks weren't doing grunge work - they realized the value of resume building.

Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were both sick and tired of doing session work, and then they formed a little rock combo that I hear was quite popular. On the other hand, there's Toto, all top session musos who formed a band which had an exceptional knack for creating bland muzak ( got punk, anyone??)
Someone like Carol Kaye...geez, I bet she influenced a ton of bass players who never even knew who she was. All those 70's TV themes that she played bass on....and you could HEAR the bass even over a 3 inch TV speaker-- it was all in the arrangements.. the studio rat pack back then was the BOMB

...and-
One night I was watching SNL & Madonna was doing "Fever". Evenyually, the lights came up and Omar Hakim & Victor Bailey were playing behind here.
Too, Anthony Jackson, IIRC, played bass on "Borderline".

Bottom line-
Pay enough & they will play.
An unknown guy at a certain Jazz site I used to hang out at was kinda always pushing his stuff. The "backing musicians" were some pretty decent/well known guys...I'm assuming he treated them pretty well.
Same site, an unknown female vocalist was pushing her album (again, with some well known Jazz guys)...one critic at that site said "...your old man must love you very, very much to underwrite this fiasco of a recording".
