Talking John Paul Jones in "Them Crooked Vultures"

Alright, just picked up the album yesterday and I must say I am falling in love with these heavy blues riffs from JPJ. Just wanted to spark some discussion on his play in TCV. I particularly am interested in his custom steel/slide bass used in 'No one loves me and neither do I"

What did anyone else think of his play on this album?

I have yet to purchase it, but it's next on the list. It got a great review in RS.

Just finished the once-through. Love it. Great to hear a 3 piece putting out such great dirty rocknroll that still has so much technical presence.

so true. In an era of pretty weak rock n roll its pleasing to the ears to have a gem like this pop along. If they were to stick together, tour some more and see through to another album I'd expect great things from TCV.

Unfortunately I felt that the album was weak, average at best. I feel like our expectations are so low now due to all the crap that is released that an album comes out like this one and we think it is genius.

Just my $.02 and my opinion.

I think while it is good, it's not a milestone or anything. Sounds more like Queens Of The Stone age to me.

I like the CD and would recommend it.

I found the tracks I've heard to be fairly ignorable. Good playing, but nothing songs. Not awful, not exceptional; just... nothing.

So even though the 2 reviews I have read about the album were full of praise it seems like it is still a 50/50 chance whether I will like it or not - darn it.

I was hoping it was just going to impossible-to-say-otherwise-great.

^^ well its by no means a musical masterpiece in terms of technicality, but its just three quality musicians jamming out just for the hell of it. And, if you like QUOTSA with a bass player on steroids then this is a band for you. with Queens being a personal fav, and being a bass player, I just found this album particularly enjoyable to listen to.

I love it, too.

Too many people look for virtuoso performances instead of good bands, I think...

I hope they stay together

and this isn't a one off. I think they could really do some cool stuff.

Grohl and him groove really well, it sounds like late era Zep, post-in-through-the-out door stuff.

They are pretty simple riff based songs, but it really grooves and there is actual BASS PLAYING on it, its not just de-de-de-de-de-tuned subharmonic string flopping, there are actual notes and stuff, that have a pitch and everything and it rocks.

I haven't heard TCV, but when I saw JPJ live in 2002 (I think? the year he toured as opening act for King Crimson) he used that lap steel bass on a killer rendition of "When The Levee Breaks". Talk about Sludge-Rock™!

I love it! I must say, JPJs tones are awesome.

But IMO, he follows the guitar a lot in the album, instead of his awesome lines.. But I still love em, and am not complaining at all.

I disagree that is why some people are not wildly endorsing it. Its good but not the best. It seems quickly put together and not a lot of time spent on the songs. Still I enjoyed it a lot, but I am already becoming bored of some of the cuts.

It sounds like a group of musicians that got together and threw together some music, not a band who labored over the material or has played together a long time. Its good ear candy, enjoy!

And thats what I like about it. As I said, no technically difficult masterpiece, but just enjoyable rock n roll

it's really good. JPJ and grohl sound great together. the bass lines and tones are both fantastic. JPJ follows the guitar riffs when it is beneficial, and grooves with grohl at other times. The record does fade a bit after song 8 or so...but overall really good riff rock and good performances. hope they tour the states!
