Is there always that much clatter in his playing, or is that bass just badly set up?

That bass is either not plugged in and we're only hearing it acoustically(with some crap mic to boot), or if it is plugged in we're hearing mostly just the "unplugged" sound(with said crap mic). And he's playing hard, probably to compensate for the above...
