Which one, his LZ Jazz bass tone, his LZ Alembic 8 string tone? Now he uses Manson 10 and 12 string basses mostly w/ SWR amps.

If you watch the 'How The West Was Won' Video you can see him use a variety of basses, it doesn't matter, it's his feel!

I personally prefer John's Alembic tone, if I have to choose one!

No flats on his jazz. He said he used them when he was doing sessions but starting using Rotosound Round Wounds.

J or P/J bass -> Line 6 Huge 360 patch tweaked. VERY close. Had the Acoustic 370/301 in the 70's and 80's and THAT came VERY VERY close.

+1 on prefer the Alembic tone.

I read that he used flats on the Jazz and rounds on his '52 Precision, which can be heard on songs like "Black Dog", "Immigrant Song", "The Ocean" and "Houses Of The Holy". In my opinion it is his best recorded tone.

Well, if I must say, all of those tracks he used a pick with.

So it seems to me that he uses rounds more when he's using his fingers and uses a pick when he's using flats.

Note that most songs with his flats have a distorted sound.

I do refute this statement, however. I have the LZ dvd and I saw him playing his Fender Jazz for the Ocean, Immigrant Song, and Black Dog.

To add more confusion, the tone on "Houses" is Jazz, not Precision, IMO.

Yes, but I meant the studio versions. He used to play a Fender Bass V live too (circa '73) but apparently never recorded with it.

Somebody should get the answers from the man himself so we could sleep again. On the other hand, he may not remember anymore.
