The studio bass track is there and its bonkers!
This is the isolated "Rio" bass track and it's great, JT is a really great player and you can really hear the part here:

What he said was regarding Hold Back The Rain where there were overdubs HE did over his own bass parts and needed to incorporate those into the live show. This dude plays his parts and you'll hear it from the first live shows from the very first album.

I don't care who played on the record! The bass in Rio rules!

I have also heard a myriad of stories about John not playing the tracks himself. The man can play! End of story. Just watch any live concert in the early days of Duran Duran. He's not faking it. Go see them live now. They're actually playing their instruments!

I think everyone would be shocked at the level of overdubs and takes that albums sometimes require. It's just the way it is. One-take-wonders wouldn't be wonders if they were easy to accomplish.

I've been a JT fanboy since day one. I think one of the first tapes I ever bought was Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

I've seen him play live and he has no problems playing the songs whatsoever. The whole band is dead on - especially recently. Even Simon's voice sounds better than ever.

JT did say that DD music was heavily produced and there were lots of o-dubs and extra bass tracks that he would have to 'learn' how to play in live situations.

He seems to have the bass under control here in this old Live Aid show. Amazing since the 'snow' was flying high back in those days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kupMnltNcf8 ~7:20 for the 'Bernard Edwards' bass solo.

Had to chime in on this thread, given my username and the fact that I am not only a Duran fan but a Peavey Cirrus owner. Met JT a few months ago and he was really cool. One of my favorite players and the guy who got ME into it! "Rio" was one of the first lines I learned...he also got me into Chic, Sister Sledge, and a lot of the 70's funk/disco/soul stuff. Even his early stuff is inspiring because you can really hear the evolution of his style. I love everything about him (looks too, ha!). So glad to see this thread! <3

Count me in the JT fanclub too.

My favorite baseline is from "Late Bar".

He may have been a pretty boy in a pretty boy band but he could definitely play. And the think the producers realized he was the best musician which is why he's mixed so up front.

I know this is a cheesy song, without much of a melody in the verse, but the bass drives it along), but the hook kills. ANd a lot of fun to play.

I loved Rio and I think it is Say A Prayer or Save A Prayer on the first album. That singer's voice and that very feminine keyboard player turned me off so much i couldn't listen to them for long. John Taylor had some very tasty parts however. What's he doing now?

He is still with Duran Duran as far as I know. I do know that Bernie Edwards did indeed "ghost" him on the first PS album but didn't seem too upset about it (saw the documentary stated earlier).

As many have stated, he was one of the reasons I began playing as well and is a fantastic player. Personal favorite is "New Religion"

"Save A Prayer" is also on Rio (their 2nd album).

The newest Bass Player mentions John Taylor's book, In The Pleasure Groove-Love. Death & Duran Duran-
http://www.amazon.com/Pleasure-Groov...or+duran+duran#_
An excerpt from Bass Player mentions why Taylor picked Aria basses; he was not into "tradition"...so no Fender basses...he liked another brand (the name escapes me) but it was too expensive (even though 'management' was buying their gear...he opted for the less expensive Aria line).
Nowadaze Taylor is saying "tradition" is something that matters to him.

1st Edition is Oct. 16 2012...so it's pretty new.
Interesting...Reading Level is for "18 & up".

Also of interest is Ken Scott's book (Scott enegineered some of their later albums with ex-Missing Persons Warren Cuccurullo)...sounds like absolute chaos for a band that had the world at its mercy a few years prior.

As a HUGE JT fan I always kind of had this theory that he did not play some of the more ambitious lines on early DD stuff and someone like a Pino Palladino type of session guy in England did and that was part of why JT had so many substance abuse problems. Just a gut theory...

He's denied that to press and in his book though. I honestly think it's conceivable that he did....by all accounts, he practiced a ton, and he had a good 7 years of guitar under his belt. I feel like even if the engineer had to really squeeze it out of him in the studio in multiple takes, he still would've been able to do it. If you listen to the first album, those lines have a lot of notes but are ultimately pretty straightforward. By "Rio" he was under Bernard's wing and was probably playing 10 hours a day, I would think. So maybe he had to really, really push...but back then, new artists had A LOT more support.

Anyone have the Bass Player Mag with the Girls on Film transcription in it? It's January 2005 with Dave Holland on the cover? PM me if you can help...

Not sure why the two John Taylor thread aren't combined? So I will post this here also:

I have been on Duran Duran overload for a few weeks now, I guess in anticipation of my SB1000 coming in and finally wanting to learn some of JT's awesome bass lines!

So it got me thinking about the first 2 albums. What do you think is the better bass album Duran Duran or Rio? Rio definitely has the hits on it, but the bass playing is more upfront and funky on the self titled release IMO. Rio sold more and maybe influenced more players because of the hits like Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf and save a Prayer. But there is something about the more minimal sound of DD that hits me, Girls on Film is INCREDIBLE, Planet Earth is good also, but for different reasons. What say you on the subject?

Also, what is your favorite Duran Duran album of all time? Mine is Notorious, all killer, no filler! Well ok...maybe Winter Marches On isn't so killer, but hey the rest of the album is REALLY good!

I don't think I could choose! I also love Notorius because it came out right when I was blossoming on the bass so to speak. The first album is a bass masterpiece especially when you listen to all the B-sides from the era.
