One of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters! Some of Mankey's guitar work from Concrete Blonde sounds very dated, but the songs & vocals are amazing. As you said, though, her bass-playing isn't really remarkable in any way. It just gets the job done.

Johnette's great, and there's no shame in not playing fancy. It probably means that you're playing the song rather than just playing your bass.

Love Concrete Blonde!! I go back and forth between them, the Tragically Hip and the Who as my favorites. Saw CB back in '87 or so opening for Dave Edmunds, I'm pretty sure I was the only one in the crowd blown away by them.
Jim Mankey is one of my favorite guitarists too, never thought his sound got "dated", it fits the song and changes when needed. He used to play bass for Sparks way back when too. Great bassist as well.
Lost track of how many times I've seen them live but they were the first band to really make an impact and insipire me music wise.

Just saw them a couple days ago.

Johnette still has 'it'.

Damn. She just rocks, she was playing a Fender P/J, maybe because it's lighter than the P she used to play?

Her voice just goes on for miles and miles.

Great show.

She's a great songwriter, solid bass player, and a fantastic singer. I like Mankey's guitar playing a lot, too; the solo in "Caroline" is rad, though his tone is a bit effect-y.

I didn't catch the reunion tour but upon seeing clips, she seems to be getting hotter with age.

Only have two of their albums: "Bloodletting" is great (and underrated), so many great songs on there and I love her voice.

Couldn't get into "Mexican Moon" though. Never really noticed her bass playing though but man, what a voice.

Another bassist/singer (also guitarrist): Aimee Mann. Her bass playing stands out for me though. It's also basic and not flashy but a great sense of melody comes through her playing where Napolitano is strictly "holding down the bottom".
