Johnny Christ (of Avenged Sevenfold) seems to have changed his gear a bit.

For City of Evil, he was known to arm himself primarily with the following:
  • Ernie Ball MusicMan Sterling
  • GK 2001RB
  • GK Neo 412
I was at A7X's show at the Warfield in San Francisco last night, and I noticed his gear has changed a bit.

For the show, he was using:
  • EBMM StingRay (single-humbucker), custom white finish with black splash graphic, and black hardware (this was the bass used for most songs)
  • EBMM StingRay (single-humbucker), burst finish... looked very grayish... I don't think it was an in-production color
  • Two GK 2001RBs
  • SansAmp RBI
  • Two GK 410RBH cabinets
  • Electro-Voice RE-20 (I think)
  • Some sort of wireless unit... not sure which one
  • Rackmounted white Boss pedal... most likely a TU-2, since he didn't have a rack tuner
Nothing was plugged into the front of the RBI. I'm not 100% sure if he was using it, but if he was, he probably used it with one of the 2001RBs for some mild overdrive, and had it connected using the rear inputs.

Both 2001RBs were fired up... it's possible that the 410RBH cabs were 4-Ohm, and he was using the 2001RB heads in bridged mode to get maximum power from each cabinet. It's just a guess, but IMO a sensible one.

They accidentally dropped beer on the mic and cabinets during the last system checks before A7X. Fortunately, the gear survived, but the roadies were panicking.

I couldn't make out the amp settings, unfortunately. The amps were on the sides of the stage, so you really couldn't tell what was dialed in.

Anyhow... I thought the TB community might be interested!

Hey, one of my old threads!

Crybaby? That'd be new. The pedal I saw was too small to be a wah. Definitely a Boss from the looks of it.

Distortion-wise, I suspect it's either the RBI or the distortion channel on a 2001RB.

ohh, i dunno then... Im a huge A7X fan. I play bass to, ive been DYING to know johnny's exact setup. I saw "The Making Of.." there new album and he said he is using a white cry baby bass. You can see some pics of his rig here: http://mixonline.com/photogallery/av...S-MICS.web.jpg And the tec guy was explaining that he mics johnny;s 4x10's clean for his ears, and distortion for P.A etc.

I just wanna know like his wireless and all that stuff hes got setup there. ALSO, by any chance, do you know where u can get some shockracks like that pic? Like a rack with that kinda drawer?

DUDE - I haven't seen a photo that clear before! It makes it easier to identify the gear. The other shots are cool, too.

So it looks like it's NOT his TU-2, then? It's with the Bogner rig. The Bass Crybaby is probably set up somewhere on stage for his use... but I don't remember if he used a wah when I saw them.

Hmm... looks like a Shure ULX wireless system with the bass rig. Nice choice. There's also a Furman power conditioner. Mic-wise, they are indeed Electro-Voice, but one's an RE27 (not an RE-20, like I originally thought) and the other's an ND868.

Other than that, my original list is pretty much correct.

Shockracks like those are a bit pricey. I've never had to look for them, but there are both mainstream and custom manufacturers out there for them. The drawers can be purchased from pro audio shops and some guitar shops, but that drawer looks wider than a standard rack one, so it might be custom too. The other drawer (the tray-style one), I've seen online at places like Musician's Friend.

Heck, you could probably order most of the rack stuff online.

RE 20 is a great mic for bass cabs.

Yup. On the Diamonds in The Rough cover, he's playing a white crackly fender. I love his tone, and i think his playing is some of the most underrated.

Care to provide an example? Not to deride JC's playing, but I certainly don't think of A7X as a band with a strong bass presence.

He dosen't have a very strong presence, but his playing is still very good:

Second Heartbeat
Blinded In Chains (right before the "bass solo" and the "solo" itself)
Afterlife

Not his best work but first that came to mind
