Heard of him, never heard him. Seems like the bass version of Yngwie Malmsteen; all wankin', no pop.

I can't stand his playing, though I did dig what he did with John M.

I think the clips of him live with John McLaughlin were very impressive. Cant say I have seen anything else that charmed me.

He is one of my favorite players, I don't think he "wanks" at all! One of the forward thinkers on our instrument. IMHO

He is an amazing player but his material, his sound and his playing do not interest me very much.

jonas rocks

he has a wide diverse body of work if you look at his solo work and cds he's guested on.

some of his indian influenced work and work on Down By Law from the bill laswell project Deadline is awesome for the time. Baliphone Dub is a great tune from that album.

Check out the album "e" by The Jonas Hellborg Group, it's amazing. It's an instrumental album of bass/keyboards/drums, similar to Billy Sheehan's Niacin.

+1 to that. i don't always enjoy ALL of his stuff but he's hardly a one-trick pony. He is a true badass and a pioneer of the instrument.

...This is no wanking. Jonas is definitely one of my favorite bassists. Every collaboration he's done from John McLaughlin to Shawn Lane to Buckethead has been fantastic.

Blew me away when I saw him with Mahavishnu in the early 80's. He's hit me hot and cold ever since, but I'll be the first to admit that I at least give it all a listen. Definitely a different soul on the instrument.

The most non-wanky, supportive thing he's done. Public Image Ltd. w/ John Lydon (Johnny Rotten). This track features Tony Williams, Bernie Worrell, and Steve Vai. Ginger Baker is also on the album.

Great musician without any doubt, plus he's got an approach surely unconventional to our beloved instrument...that said, I don't dig that much his solo production, except a couple of albums ("E" and "Icon")...loved him on Mike Shrieve's "Deep Umbra"...

He did a live album with Syrian musicians (IIRC, 2 percussionists and a flute player) called "Aram of 2 Rivers".

http://www.amazon.com/Aram-2-Rivers-...222778&sr=8-19

He plays acoustic bass guitar (I guess he does so exclusively for a while now). I'm not an expert on Middle Eastern music by any means, but his note choices and articulation, as well as the tone of his instrument, are very convincing for me. (I'm not really a big fan of his slapping though.)

Michael Shrieve's "Two Doors", and his own "The Word", two of my favorite albums of all time!

He is a monster bassist. Personae, Temporal Analogues of Paradise & Art Metal are my faves.

I can see where the wanking comments come from, and i do think his slapping does get a little excessive, but he really does a lot of cool stuff too--
