Wow. How does that affect his intonation?
And I agree with above, he is a legend.

His fretboard looks similar but not as severe as this Steve Vai fretboard.
Steve Vai & True Temperment: A new type of guitar fretboard? | Dolphin Music

My understanding is that it's supposed to be better for intonation.

I never heard of this guy until warwick put him in every ad of the last 3 years. Bass player mag acts like he's the 13 apostle. he's a great player and all, but who could sit through more than ten minutes of that stuff. jeez. I'm better than you. no. I'm better. who cares.

Here's 10 minutes of Jonas Hellborg that I've had trouble not sitting through YouTube - Jonas Hellborg live @ Warwick Bass Concert Melbourne

One of the deep thinkers of electric bass, I love his work, especially the mind-meld playing he did with the late great Shawn Lane.

However, I didn't hear any annoying fret clatter when Jaco played.

Agreed. I was lucky enough to see Jonas, Selvaganesh and Shawn down in San Diego when they were touring for the Good People in Times of Evil disc.

Quite the experience.

I don't hear any striking similarities, different tones, different styles.

Hellborg was already there 30 years ago, playing with Mc Laughlin.
I listened to Elegant Punk countless times ,trying to reproduce his stuff.

I've tried to pull off that raga type vibrato that he uses at times, but damn is it hard.

Thanks for mentioning that one--I hadn't seen it before. Reminds me a lot of his solo ABG stuff, which I really like. There are even some quotes from one of the pieces off "Silent Life" toward then end, though I don't remember the title.
