JONATHAN HERERRA IS LEAVING BASS PLAYER!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just received the new edition of Bass Player magazine and see that Jonathan Hererra is leaving the magazine as Senior Editor and will be a guest from time to time. Sounds like it's his choice.

Sad... but likely true.

BP was at its height when the bass playing, as well as gear, was in flux during the '80s / '90s. Not so much now...

I never heard why things went down as they did.

Sadly I don't see it lasting long going the way they're going now. The magazine is getting so thin, it's looking more like an insert and less like a magazine every month.

+1 on Bill Leigh, though I think Herrera has been doing the best he can with whats been available. Bass Player has been suffering through this economy. I hope it finds its balance point soon. I'll miss it if it disappears, even if the quality has been up and down lately. I got on board with the mag early in my musical life and its been an ever present resource since.

Also, if anyone is out there: Literate, educated (and unemployed) Bay Area bassist seeks job in music journalism. Hello? Is this thing on? Hello?

If you wait around for the $24/two year deal, it's got a buck's worth of stuff in most issues.

I think the age of paper is going away, and while they have made improvements in the web site side, its still a bit clunky and cluttered. I don't even have it bookmarked. If they improved the web site, and presented more material in an organized fashion, I'd subscribe for the same amount of money.

The editorial content has gotten pretty thin, with the exception of Jay Goldsby's excellent articles. Musician's Friend sends me more reading material.

Tough times for the magazine trade.

I'm really liking Bass Musician Magazines online format more than BP lately. (No I don't work for them) If BP online was formated in, I don't know, a somewhat LOGICAL way it would definitely help their situation.

I hope not. I'm primarily a guitarist and Guitar Player has really sucked lately. Maybe one good article per issue, if you're lucky. Tons of useless advertising shamelessly passed off as editorial content.

I've only been into bass for a year or two, but I lucked into some older Bass Players from '06, '07 and '08. There were some great articles and lessons. In fact, I've mostly enjoyed the most recent issues. The Bootsy article was good, as was the David Ellefson interview. Even though I don't know anything about Bill Laswell, I'm looking forward to reading the interview.

If there are any future Bass Player editors reading: Please, for the love of whatever you believe in, stop putting ads in the middle of your full song transcriptions!

That aside, Bass Player is still worth the buck an issue that the subscription costs. Guitar Player wants me to renew for $25 a year. No thanks.

if it were really a bass players magazine they could groove over the changes better.

I haven't subscribed to BP since the early 2000s... It started losing steam for me after about 2003/2004. I read it occasionally and buy a single issue here and there, but could never justify a subscription anymore. I still find more 'new' stuff from pulling out my old back issues from '97 to '03 from time to time.

I don't think that any changes at Bass Player are anything except another sign of contraction in the publishing business. If you've picked up a copy of any magazine it's a lot thinner than it used to be because there are a lot less ads in it. Companies are spending their shrunken ad budgets online instead of print. I hope Bass Player doesn't go away - that would be sad.
