Thumbs up JORGEN CARLSSON, Gov't Mule - New Album

Sign in to disble this ad
I just listened to the new Gov't Mule album By A Thread.

Wow.

I am not really familiar with Jorgen's work in the past, but he sounds great with the Mule. I was a fan of Andy Hess, but Carlsson sounds like a better fit.

I understand the Jorgan uses Pbass' and Tbirds, uses a pick, and favors Ampeg. Does anyone have any other information about him? I saw in another thread that he also uses Marshall heads as well.

His tone on the first track, Broke Down On Brazos, sounds great. It sounds like a Tbird to me... but it could be something else. Also, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top is playing on this track. He sounds great along side Warren Hayes.

By the way, Warrens guitar playing is awesome... but what really drives this band is Warrens voice. He has a soulful, emotionally brutal, voice.

Thoughts?

I haven't liked any Mule since Woody passed. Is Jorgen more along the lines of Woody's playing?

There's only two songs out with Jorgen so it's kind of tough to tell, but if I had to make a call based on those two songs, I'd say that he is.

Warren thinks so. I read an interview online where he says he brings some of Al's approach to band. I think he sounds a little like AW, but, he really has his own sound. It doesn't sound at all like Andy Hess.

The whole album is awesome. I like Andy Hess, but Jorgen (IMO) is a much better fit for The Mule.

I saw them in Richmond a couple of months ago and Joren Carlsson sounded great with them. I really liked the stuff Andy Hess did with Mule but as others have said he is a much better fit. I downloaded the whole album from Itunes today and there are several songs that harken back to the Woody days. Very bass driven IMO. I look forward to seeing them again.

A very dark and distorted tone. I saw them in SF last month he was impressive. He used a P bass and Tbird. I agree with everybody, I liked Andy too but this guy is a better fit.

AMEN!!!!!I certainly hope/pray that his style is similar to Allen Woody's!!
No disrespect to Andy Hess.I guess I just associate the Mule's "sound" with a style like A.W.'s.

I think he uses a Marshall Super Bass 100 most of the time. He uses an Ampeg 810 but I think his Marshall sounds are sick!

The new album is out in stores now. Jorgen has a very grindy tone, much more in the style of Woody.

I saw Gov't Mule in Indy last Friday, and can 2nd Lemoore-on's claim.

I'm fairly sure he had an overdrive/distortion/fuzz (or one of each?) pedal or two as well.

They played two sets of about an hour and a half each. It was a great show.

I hope there are some nice costumes at the Halloween party I'm playing tonight. It's a fill in and I took the gig before I knew the Mule's tour schedule. I love seeing them at the Casino.

I don't think that he sounds anything like Woody other than the fact that he uses tube amps. I've only seen the Mule one time and that was the Dose tour and I've been spoiled ever since. I buy all of their releases and even some of the Mule Tracks that they release and while I believe all of the bass players have something to offer, they have not overcome the loss of Woody IMHO.

I still have yet to see another bass player do what Woody did to that Ampeg. He had that thing workin so hard it was awesome.

As far as the new record goes, I'm still working on it. It did not grab me from the start but more of the songs are getting my attention. A couple of the tracks really sound more like Warren Haynes solo stuff to me, not like Mule songs.

Pretty kick ass album! I like Jorgen's style too. More aggressive like Woodys.

I hope they don't totally abandon their dub stuff now though.

I agree about half the songs sound like Warren's solo stuff. others are solid mule stuff.

Well, I decided that I really needed to check this guy out so I went out to Mule Tracks and downloaded their recent show from Indianapolis and they blew the doors off that joint. He's got his own thing going on but it works for sure. Check the link if you're interested in this kind of stuff.

I've been a fan of the mule for quite some time now.Unfortunately coming from Greece I did not have the chance to see them live...
until I moved to Germany in February and watched them live on Monday!!!Oh man!!!What a show!!!

I have to agree that the original mule had a lot of character and was quite more aggressive because of Allen's tone.To tell you the truth I also really like the material they put together while Andy was in the band.I believe his style was more elegant and not that "rock heavy".For me this worked because it brought a finer version of the mule with quieter, prettier songs and also proved that Warren's guitar playing and singing can be even more sweet than most people thought.

But this guy?!? Whoa,he's got both vibes down! His tone varied from super dark and dirty(imagine a darker version of the really distorted stuff tim commerford has done and also add pick style playing to the mix)to really sweet but bass heavy, almost dubby, with a bit of overdrive(similar to andy's tone but a little dirtier)

He played thru 2 guitar amps;a marshall(i think it was a jcm800)
and a category 5 joe bonamassa signature head(yes i have a keen eye)and marshall cabs(loaded with four 12s I guess.I am not a guitar guy but they looked just like regular marshall guitar cabs).I don't know what effects he used because I couldn't see his pedals from where I was standing(stupid monitors)but there definitely was a volume pedal,a delay and a tuner.
