CURTIS MAYFIELD?

I picked up a Curtis Mayfield Anthology disc today, they were playing it at a used record store. Anyway, I should know this but who played on his stuff, like "Pusherman", So in Love" and "Only You Man"? Classic textbook Funk lines, Great stuff. Also, who played on the Impressions stuff?

Lucky Scott was on a bit of the early stuff.

1971's show at the Bitter End in NYC released as "Curtis Live!" is an album that has one of my favorite bass tones EVER!

Joseph "Lucky" Scott

I am really digging this guy. I have two records that he's on, an Aretha Franklin one and a Curtis Mayfield record. He's got really great tone and feel. Show your love for this funky cat!

Which Curtis Mayfield record? Which Aretha Franklin record? I'm not familiar with the name, I may be digging him and not even knowing it.

he played on Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, Curtis Live!, Roots, something to believe in, and honesty.

with aretha he did Almighty Fire.

he also did some work with Phil Upchurch on the album Lovin' Feeling.

This guy was like a layer of thick concrete. Very solid, and the rest of the band was free to ride on top of this playing without fear of potholes! May he RIP.

One of my idols.... I love the man's playing and tone! I've spent a lot of time trying to cop his lines and vibe.

Woody, do you have any detals on his passing? Other than album credits and the recent snippet in Bass Player the other month I've never found anything much about him.

OH, that Joseph "Lucky" Scott funny, just a few weeks ago my instructor and I were working on the song Freddie's Dead. There are some great lines on that Superfly cd.

James,
I found this on the web:

'Hello, I was looking at your website and saw that someone was looking for info on Joseph 'Lucky' Scott. Lucky is my wife's first cousin. Sam Gooden of the Impressions is her father. Lucky passed away several years ago from a heart condition. He was out of state playing with a gospel group and was hospitalized. He seemed fine and returned home to a local hospital and suprisingly passed away the next day.Hope this info helps.
Darryl Griffin'

Although he didn't have the name recognition of a Jamerson or a Rainey, Lucky Scott was one of the great funk players of his era. We would play an entire Curtis Mayfield set during a 6 set dance gig back in the day and some of my favorite moments were playing some of the fills in Freddie's Dead. We still occasionally do Move On Up and the bassline just drives the bus. A great player playing great material.

i think your point is further proven by how few people have responded to this thread. what r&b and funk cat doesn't know freddie's dead, you know? they just don't know who played it, its a shame man.

Who played bass on Curtis Mayfield's Superfly?

Can't find it anywhere. Was it him?

I've always loved the bassline on the title track of "Superfly"!
