Juan Nelson or Larry Graham??

Sign in to disble this ad
I was just watching the Warwick DVD that came with this month's issue of bass player. Larry Graham gets some sick stuff going, but then at around 4:54 in the vid, he starts playing a series of licks that I have heard before on a Juan Nelson bass solo..

YouTube - Juan Nelson bass solo

Was Juan Nelson playing tribute to Larry in the solo, as he does to James Brown or is Larry Graham ripping him off?

Thanks!

Larry Graham doesn't need to "rip off" anyone.

I just watched the Juan Nelson solo. It sounds great, but with the possible exception of the lick he plays at about 5:07, that sounds pretty much like basic pentatonic stuff to me; normal sounding bass licks that would be impossible to attribute to any one player. IMO.

disclaimer- I am not trying to dis Larry Graham or Juan Nelson- but to me there are some strong similiarities. Personally, I am happy to rip them both off. Here is the Warwick footage
YouTube - WARWICK FUSS ON THE BUSS Part 1

Check out 4:54 and then check out the Juan Nelson at 5:38 in this vid:

There are other things that sound very close to me as well. Everything after 4:54 sounds a lot like elements that are in the Juan Nelson solo.

Thanks Bob, that is exactly what I wanted to know, if this was something that Juan was taking from Larry. Please post if you find it! Juan does mention Larry as an inspiration on his myspace page.

There's a reason why Juan says "Old school!" during that part of his solo. Those are largely signature Graham licks from 1975. So no, Graham isn't ripping him off.

Here's ground zero: YouTube - Graham Central Station - The Jam
