Big surprise. I was talking to a local jazz cat here in indy and was telling me I guess marsalis had to cancel for some reason. They got herbie to take his place this weekend. He's playing with Richie Barshay, Lionel Loueke, and Matt Garrison.

Can't wait!

I'm definately going to be there I think. When my dad told me that Marsolis cancelled I was pissed, but then he mentioned that Herbie was going to fill his slot...

Herbie is freaking amazing, no way it'll be a dissapointing show.

Oh good Lord.......You guys have no idea what you're in for. Really, forget Herbie, he's great and all, but between Matt Garrison and Lionel you're in for it.....I saw Lionel just as he finished Berklee in Boston and he's the real deal in every way. He's going to be one of the greatest musicians of our time. Keep an eye on him. OH MAN....Garrison and Lionel on the same stage!!!!! Guess you can tell I'm jealous.

Oddly enough, I just got back from the Basslines program at Berklee a few days ago and was jealous of all of the good shows you guys get to see out there.

Haven't heard Lionel yet... i''ll look forward to it. Garrison is great. I'm pumped about that. Herbie wasn't the greatest on his wayne shorter endeavor or recent compilations but the old man deserves some more repect then "forget herbie"
The handful of times i've seen him he always at least surrounds himself with some awesome musicians *cough* terri lyne *cough*

and you still owe me CD recommendations. Cheers

Every hear the addage how do you make a million playing jazz?
Start with two million.

Indy can't bring in enough with just jazz so the big name closers never are. Hell two years ago I was walking around after mehldau and scofield and heard what? Shaggy? I forgot he existed until i was walking by and suddenly heard his 'girl your my angel' rendition.... actually that was a good year with jazz @ lincoln center and some others that were pretty good too...

There's some names, just keep your eyes open. We had Rufus Reid, Melvin Sparks, Danillo Perez all come through the Jazz Kitchen in the past month or so.... certainly not the heritage indy once had unfortunately, but too many people don't get out enough to hear what some of these people have to say.

No disrespect to Herbie....you'll see what i'm talking about though when you see the show.

As for CD's, start at Lionel's website. Also, Andrew Hill's newest CD "Time Lines" and Charle's Llyod's "Jumping the Creek". Also get Wayne Shorter's "Footprints Live" album from a couple of years back.
