I have been opening my ears to Duran Duran lately and have an interesting opinion of John Taylor's bass playing. I want to know what others think...

So let me know your take on John Taylor, love him, hate him, genius, talentless??? I am just curious to hear.

Thanks

so does this mean nobody likes him?

I really have become a fan of his very quickly. I love his simple yet very full bass lines.
He also is great with the ghost notes.

Not a matter of liking him. He played the notes that fit that sound. What is he doing today 25 years after the band?

...like him.
BTW, if you are a fan of Duran Duran, check out Japan with Mick Karn. I'm not sure why DD caught on big & Japan didn't.

More of a metal guy myself, but I admit I do like to listen to something different every now and then, and Duran Duran is one of those diversions. I posted a while back in another thread about how, IMO, John Taylor was one of the more underrated bassists. I've tried to learn some of his basslines, more or less just to expand my abilities to play different genres. He's a very capable bassist, and deserves more credit than he receives.

I think John Taylor is a great bassist. He's definitely one of the best of that era,and that style of music, for sure. Half of the players back then (80's,dance-type music) were too worried about messing up their delicate, choreographed dance steps. And for the other half? They were too damn busy with their Aqua-Net Hairspray.
Players really should perk their ears up and give him a listen. Sure, the music was kinda cheesy. But,Mr.Taylor's bass lines sure wasn't. The man has g-r-e-a-t feel in his playing. Even the best of us could learn from him. He has great taste for a "bass hero",too:

Not a huge fan of the music but his playing is really good. I only listen to the songs for his parts. The Powerstation stuff was better IMO ( mostly Palmer vs. LeBon ).

I love curious people.

In my opinion, so far as bass players go, Greg Ridley of Humble Pie has always tickled my fancy... he's but one of MANy classic bassists!

I can't leave out one of my all-time favourite bassist and his name is SIR Terry "Geezer" Butler!
