Good Lord!!! I'm at work and was doing a bit of web browsing during lunch, wasn't looking for but came across Doug Johns. "Well, lets see who this fellow is" I thought. Un-friggin-real!! I've never heard of the guy and I am so moved by his skill. Probably more so than any other player I've heard from that cut. Just amazing.

Please, tell me more about this monster player!!

Ha. Same thing just happened to me. Just found him in the recommendations on iTunes when browsing other albums. Amazing player. Love the tight horn arrangements, and I love that he doesn't sound like either Jaco, Marcus, or Victor. Maybe his tone is close to Victor's because he's using a P/J pickup set-up, but Doug's has so much more growl.

He's a recent discovery for me, too. Mighty fine!

One word of warning: Twice I've ordered his album Pocket Fulla Nasty from Amazon, and twice I've received his earlier album, Doug Johns. It's a fine album, I kept it the first time, but I'm wondering how to get the other one???

I also dig his drummer and co-producer Chris Ceja, they are an awesome rhythm section.

I came across Doug the same way about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Through the itunes "if you like this, try this" suggestion bar. I found myself kind of worn out with the whole "bass album" stuff until I listened to DJ. Got both of his albums and they are my favorites for sure. Got to meet Doug at the winter NAMM show this last January and he was a super cool guy. Invited me over to the Genz booth and showed me (and the crowd that quickly gathered) the ropes of the shuttle amps, took time for some pics, and was just down for hanging out. He truly appreciates all his fans and I'm one that is looking forward to his new release here in the next few months.

I don't feel so alone now seeing how some of you have discdoverd him as of late.

Ya know, as much as I can and DO respect Victor, Stanley and Tal, DJ's playing just has that "something" that I find irresistable. Underneath those chops seems to be this real "earthy-ness" for lack of a better way to put it. His tone growls and he's tight but there's that something that I can't put my finger on that makes me go "YEAH!!!" more than other players. I hear some Jaco in there too but not to the point of ripping him off.

Not knocking anybody, but I haven't been this moved by another bass player in decades.

I understand what you're saying. My first exposure to Doug Johns was live last year at one of the Night of Bass shows here in Chicago that Jauqo puts on. It was just him and a drummer--he's a monster, yes, but there's an appealing melodicism to his stuff. I was also amused by a couple rock/R&B licks he threw in for grins. I'm still not sure sitting down and listening to his albums is gonna be for me, but I'd love to see him play again.

In addition to being a great (read as phenomomal) player, he's really a very nice guy too. Just a regular, approachable guy.

Got to meet Doug Johns and Jeff Genzler yesterday at the Perfect Bass in Baton Rouge. Both very cool, and a pleasure to chat with. Doug lit up his old pedulla on some great genz gear. I think even the guitar players there were impressed!

This just happened to me.
Here's hoping they get it right this next time when they re-send it.

+1
I got to meet the same pair in Oklahoma City on Saturday. Both were very nice guys and a treat to talk to. Doug can play a little bit ! Getting to talk to him and watch him play (actually talking and explaining while demonstrating some killer licks at the same time) was such a kick. That was a fun day.
