It's not just you. I think John Deacon is a great bassist too.

I also think he's amazing, but I think due to Brian's flashy guitar playing hardly anyone who's not a bass player noticed his imaginative, elegant and often understated lines, it's a shame, I think he's insanely underrated.

You can't really miss him on Under Pressure either, or Flash! (ahh, ahhhh, he'll save every one of us - definately one of the top it's-good-because-it's-bad films of all time).

Great bassist, great band.

Also, I think It's a Kind of Magic was used in Highlander (for which Queen did all of the music) and not Batman (which I believe was mostly Prince).

Cheers

I think his lines, in reference to how they interact with the songs of Queen, are very similar to how Paul McCartney's do in the Beatle's songs. They both seem to come from a very similar, melodically interesting and classic perspective. Neither are 'flashy' but both are very fun and intersting - and not 'typical'. I love both players lines and strive to be as clever and appropriate in my playing.

Not there yet... maybe in another 23 years. :-)

John Deacon was a great rock bass player. as has already been mentioned, another one bites the dust is an absolute classic.

deacon was a very solid player and very good songwriter in a band filled with them. you should check out the dvd 'making of a nite at the opera." i think it's the latest one in the classic album making of series. really cool stuff. unfortunately deacon is totally reclusive now. he chose not to participate in the interviews. but it's still great to see the old footage and hear how the band went about making that brilliant record.

It's a bit unfair to call John reclusive. Just because he has chosen to bow out of the public eye, doesn't mean he won't leave the house!

But yeah - Wonderful, wonderful bass playing.

Hell yeah!!
Although people tend to latch onto the more inyour face lines "AOBTD" (which in fairness is robbed from good times) or A kind of Magic..but you guys should check the earlier Queen stuff for some fantastic bass playing..

Off the top of my head:
Millionaires Waltz..A Day At the Races
Misfire................Sheer Heart Attack
Your my best friend.Night At the Opera
Killer Queen.........Sheer Heart Attack
*One Vision...........Live Magic..(listen for the guitar solo)
Machines............The Works
The Whole Miracle Album (yeah there are bass synths there as well)

etc etc

*I'd nearly swear that I read somewhere that John Deacon played drums on One Vision and Roger Taylor played bass??? anyone any info on this?

Yeah he was pretty cool, his style never appealed to me but he certainly did come up with some rhythmically trick lines...
Queen were the first band I ever fell in love with, and I always will love them...

queen:

vocals - amazing
guitar - fabulous
bass - not particularly technically stunning, but definitely just what the doctor called for for their music.

i miss freddie big time, though. innuendo was a great album.

i love his lines at the beginning of songs, where freddy does a piano intro too, which is almost all queen songs. the tone is insanely delicious. anyone know what he plays to get it? i think ive seen him in videos with musicmans and fenders but i could be wrong.

I was a guitar player learning "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
when I realized that the bass line was so much cooler than the guitar parts.....
I got a precision, learned that bass line and just kept
going. I still pick up the guitar occasionally, but I'm a bass player now.
