Justin Chancellor in Bass Player Mag, July 2007! (Good read but BP Screwed Up BAD!)

Since the magazine stuff is copywritten, TB rules says it can't be posted, but here is a link to the site where you can find the scans yourself.

http://www.tooltabs.net/forum_two (Go to the Gear section)

Bryan Beller royally ****ed up the tabs for the songs. Those are WAAAAAAAY off, not even in the right ****ing key... Bass player receive a letter from me This isn't the first time they butchered a song by Tool, or any band for that matter. It really pisses me off and is totally unprofessional. No "IMO", that is the TRUTH.

You would think that they would keep the artist around to ask them how it's played, instead they make an attempt, which seems to me like he didn't even listen to the song. Hell ,there is a link on Tools website to Tooltabs.net (which I have contributed tabs and am a Mod on)
which has the most accurate tabs on the net.

I just find it ridiculous on how one could butcher something so bad... its not even IN KEY!!!

A fire needs to be lit under a couple asses there.

Rant Over.

On a positive note, it is a really good article and answers some gear and set up questions. Bassplayer got a couple things/left some things out...

They left out his bass whammy.
Him using a splitter box I'm not sure about, because he has a Radial JD7 Mixer (http://www.radialeng.com/di-jd7.htm) in his rack.

Otherwise, a very good interview.

That was the first thing I noticed when I read over the article. How do you have an interview in which the Whammy is mentioned, talk to the guy about his gear and his setup and then spend time diagramming his gear/setup while forgetting the guy's most ubiquitous effect?

It's a minor thing, but coupled with inaccurate transcriptions, it just makes the whole magazine look sloppy and reminds me why I stopped subscribing.

Thanks for posting this article, since I probably would have bought this issue just for this feature.

I think reading comprehension would be a swell thing to start using.

It states, and let me quote, "Ex. 1 is INSPIRED by the 9/8 groove in "Jambi", which essentially consists of three layers."

It's not a transcription of it.

I'm not here to defend the magazine but Jesus, try reading the damn thing.

PS: It states each and every time that the lines are inspired by the songs, not the actual songs.

I thought it was a great article. They went indepth on the construction of songs, and even if the transcriptions were off, as said before, they never said they were the actual songs.

I have noticed over the years that a lot of the examples that they print are "like" or "remenicent" of the player's line. Does any one know why they don't just put in the actual songs? Is it copyright problems? It would be nice for an actual transcription (besides the complete bass lines that they include every month).

It's gotta be. Otherwise they'd have more than one 'official' transcription of a song each month.

I only noticed that it was making an example for the first one, not the other two. My mistake. Still feel as though they could have done a better job.

The mags have to pay the publisher of the song if it's a transcription. To keep costs down the mags will use a "reminicent" line, which is adequate as their point is to convey an example of the bassists' technqiue.

On a related point, Guitar World (and GW's Bass Guitar) magazine got rid of the conventional notation in their transcriptions in favor of a tablature only format to reduce costs to publishers.

Maybe he was in a great rush when he made the tab?

It also means that the bulk of their readers were happy with just the tab

Doesn't the cover of that magazine mention an article about Led Zep in the studio? I was looking through it but couldn't find the article. Is it in there?

Either way his gear is wrong in the article. I saw his board last weekk, it is exactly like mine.....LOL. Also, JC does not use the XLR jack on the wal bass...not live anyways....

If you're just now seeing that BP mag can't match up gear to what they discuss in an artist interview, where've you been!??

It was a good read albeit the gear mishaps.

Oh and WBP, can we see that board or what?

I was looking for the Eddie Kramer article as well. I found it nestled in the Billy Cox story.

I finally found it after buying the magazine. It was a bit of a let down. I was hoping for at least a page!
