I recently busted out Beck's Midnight Vultures for the first time in a while, and I have to say that Justin is a monster. His lines are always perfect, and he's got groove for days. Aside from his work with Beck, he's done a ton of other great stuff, in the studio and otherwise. I hadn't heard him in a while, but listening to this album put him back at the top of my list, as far as great players are concerned. If you haven't heard him - you definitely need to check him out.

He's also using a REDDI at the moment, he really has an awesome tone makes me wanna string alot of my basses up with flats.

He's one of my all time favorites, and his parts on the first Ima Robot disc sent me back to the drawing board for some of my parts in my then current band. And at a "meet and greet" after an Ima Robot show, I got to tell him that, which was cool. He's a really down to earth, nice guy.

Gear interview here-

I always thought he does some very creative bass playing for top 40 music, sometimes even experimental

Do you find producers today, favor a passive tone?

JMJ -Unequivocally. I can't bring in an active bass, and the only one I have anyway (besides an RD, which doesn't really count, in my book) is a Wal, and that is a very unique voice, thankfully.

He is a pretty cool guy and a very good bassist.

He's cool but I don't always dig that thuddy sound he's got going on a lot of the time, but then again I've only heard him play with Beck. I think I'm gonna check out some Ima Robot next.
