I really enjoyed his paying as well. With the super le stuff he was doing, I thought the way he utilized space showed a really musicality, plus he looked like was really enjoying what he wasn't paying as much as when he was digging in.

That's Adam Blackstone. He's JT's new musical director and an absolute BEAST! He's worked Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z and tons more. Super musical cat and a great player

Yup, Adam for sure. He had a front page feature in Bass Player a while back. A real pro

He killed it on that first song! Did anyone else notice the problems he was having on the second song? It looked like he couldn't hear himself

I was lucky enough to go to a private pre-release Jill Scott gig one time, and Adam Blackstone was playing--I was sitting right up front near him---he's a monster. His groove is SICK.

The only time I ever watch(DVR) SNL is when he's on. I'm not a huge fan of the guy's music, but he is funny as crap. And, yes, that was some good playing.

Even through my low-rent PC speakers, I could hear his tone & groove.

Too bad the FCC doesn't make it mandatory for a TV director to show at least ONE long lasting shot of the Bassist's rig when a performance is being broadcast!

I saw the episode but didn't pay any attention -- I watched it on Hulu today and was BLOWN AWAY by this Brother's playing. Was going to create a thread to post the link but I'm glad I searched first.

Killer player -- the word that came to mind was "tasteful" -- beautiful use of space and groove.

Mr. Blackstone was on the cover of Bass Player Magazine last year.

Here's the article:

exactly. Just SUPER tasteful. As a young aspiring bassist myself, it's taken me many years to really find that balance of talent and taste and I guess it speaks for itself why Adam is MDing and performing with the world's biggest acts. Hell, I'm sure we all struggle with it. You want to show off your skills, you want to be seen as well as heard, and you want to compliment the ensemble, but often finding the balance point between all of these is easier said than done. I still go back and listen to recordings I did years ago that I thought were SLAMMIN back then, but the musical maturity I've gained since then has my head in my hands going, "wow, did I REALLY play this and think it was tasteful?!"

I would say Adam Blackstone, at least by his playing in this JT clip, has a complete grasp on what is tasteful, while still showing off and complimenting the ensemble almost to the point of elevating them to another level.

Gotta read that article now!
