You are correct but the realty is that they can make any music they choose commercially viable if they wanted to.

I agree. Needs a lot more variety and for &^%$#@* sake, can all the vocal tunes! Please!! There's a LOT of music out there that never even sees the light of day on radio! Really good stuff! I can't stand dictated playlists! Take a chance like in the old days!

I remember when Alain Caron's CD "Rhythm and Jazz" was released and subsequently reviewed by Bassplayer magazine. One of the things the reviewer said was that his CD was everything that "Smooth jazz" was not and that it was too bad that more people would not ever hear it. Like I said before, I have no problem with smooth jazz even though it is not my cup of tea, what I have a problem with are exec types that decide what everyone else gets to hear.

I'm a huge Rippingtons/Stone fan. Great tunes and a great bassist.

The basics. Over saturate all outlets of media and tell every one how great, deep and original the artist is and the seed is planted.

Get a few shallow artist who've already been down the path of the machine to put this great, deep and original artist on an artistic pedestal and there you have it.

And that is just the beginning.

This song has a certain emotion to it, reminds me that sadness is part of life. The power of music (such as this) will never cease to amaze me.

Kim Stone was the only reason I ever really LISTENED to the Ripps... Now I'm going to have to move to Colorado to hear him. He is absolutely one of my biggest influences. From a "gear perspective", I think it's interesting the changes in rigs he's had over the years. I think he still pulls out his old Roscoes for specific tunes, but mostly I think he just uses his Fender five strings. Like his quote says, I sure wish Fender would do a Kim Stone model, I seriously doubt his is completely stock!

He may have had it modified since his initial statement of it being just a stock instrument. The last time I saw him with the Ripps, he was actually playing something else (sorta looked like a Tune bass). His best sound was with him using Roscoe basses. Never liked his sound on Fenders. Funny though, the new guy plays Fenders and he sounds decent.

I have been a big fan of the Rippingtons since I first heard their music on The Weather Channel, of all places!

I think that Kim Stone is one of the most under-appreciated players out there! I have seen him perform with Spyro Gyra and the Rippingtons, and he not only grooves his butt off but also can solo like a mofo.

Sound wise, I always thought his Roscoe basses were way too bright - I personally prefer hearing him on Fenders.

2003 Kim Stone Interview

I interviewed Kim Stone for a bass magazine in late 2002/early 2003.

I recall that he was very forthcoming about his early development and influences. We also talked about his work with Spyro Gyra, The Rippingtons and did a track-by-track discussion of his new trio CD at the time, "Let's Cool One". I believe that we also discussed his basses, his live and studio gear, sound, etc. We covered a lot of ground.

I remember it as great conversation and he was very cool. In fact, he called to thank me after he received the final draft. A real classy guy.

I caught wind of the Rippingtons way before Kim joined the band. I was kinda surprised when I saw him playing with them!
