On this song, you can clearly hear the licks and approach that Jaco learned from Jerry Jemmott. Jemmott could have easily been playing "Come on Come Over" or "Black Market."

Classic. Every time I watch this video, my jaw drops. Jemmott's phrasing is incredible.

Thanks Greg. I had just gone to my laptop and copied it there because my iPad was giving me problems.

I looked for this because of the write up on Jerry Jemmott in the latest Bass Player. I did not know that Jemmott had such a strong jazz back ground included gigs with Merer Ellington. It is also interesting to note that Jemmott is only five years older than Jaco. AA few years can make a huge difference. Just think, the exact same age gap exists between Larry Graham and Stanley Clarke.

was that Jaco or Alphonso Johnson who did the title track to "Black Market"? Either way, very groovy playing

Check out his ridiculous bassline on Archie Shepp's 'Attica Blues'. (With another electric bassist in unison on the 'choruses'.)

Also Freddie King's great album 'My Feeling For The Blues'. Maybe one of my fave JJ outings. Donny Hathaway on horn arrangements.

Alphonso Johnson did play on the song Black Market. I meant Barbary Coast instead. I don't know why I get those songs mixed up.

Jerry Jemmott has always been one of my favorite bassists. Just awesome. Looks like he's having a good time here jammin' with the Allman Brothers.

I saw him a few years ago with Gregg Allman's band, he killed it. When they did an Allman Brothers song they reworked it into a R&B rave up, very cool!

Johnson is on the studio cut ("Black Market")...there are a few live Weather Report recordings with Jaco playing the tune.
"Barbary Coast" & "Cannonball" are the only 2 tunes with Jaco on Black Market.
The other tunes with Alphonso are very strong tunes (e.g. "Elegant People" & "Herandnu").
Jaco does a nice job on "Elegant People" on various Live albums.

Was Jerry Jemmott the first session or sideman in r&b to really be known for the Jazz Bass sound? I can think of the guy at Muscle Schoals as another Jazz guy. The other Jazz guys I can think of we're band players like Bootsy, Larry Abraham, and Bobby Vega.

JJ and David Hood are certainly the two early Jazz Bass guys that come to my mind, too.

David Hood, that's the Muscle Schoals guy! I don't know why I blanked on his name.

This concert vid was my first exposure to King Curtis... damn that band smokes, of course Jerry kills it.

The jam when he intros the band is just amazing.

Jerry also did some excellent work with the Rascals "Island Of Real" album.

Um, Joe Osborn!!!!

BTW, I think Aretha's live album recorded at the Filmore with Curtis' band is a required purchase for every bass player (along with the live Donny Hathaway album with Willie Weeks).
Jaco acknowledged his debt to Jemmott frequent, including on the DCI video instruction package with Jerry.

I know Joe Osborn was a huge studio player, but I don't remember him as a major r&b influence, he did a lot of LA pop sessions.
I was not implying that Jaco did not credit Jemmott. I think everyone who has been around a while has seen the Jaco video featuring Jemmott. Too bad that I don't think Jemmott was in the best playing shape at the I e because his hand had been damaged by a police man that falsely accused him of shoplifting.

+1, the Rascals had great taste in players including Chuck Rainey and Pops Popwell.

Not trying to discredit funkinbottom's claim, but is the bassist on the Rascals album really Jerry Jemmott? These cuts are funky so I looked further and it seems Robert Popwell is credited for playing bass on the album? Anyone know? Thanks!
