thanks for encouraging me to check it out.
It was great! Tight band, had the crowed wrapped around their finger. The proof is always in a smiling, dancing audience.

Robert Bell plays a Zon, FYI

If you want to see one of the great funk bassists and band leaders of all time, go to the show! Robert Kool Bell was throwin' it down long before 80% of TB members were born. Heck, Marcus Miller lists him as a major influence. What more do you need?

show report

I had a short lunch break, so i only caught the end of the set. I arrived in time to hear Ladies night, get down on it, celebration, and a few ones I hadn't heard. Naturally, Celebration was the finisher.

They're an excellent crowd pleaser, that's for sure. They had a lot of showmanship, when the horn players weren't singing or blowing they were doing some fun choreographed moves to the songs. They fed the crowd lots of call and response stuff too.

Bell opened Get down on it with a pretty slappy/poppy bass solo, but most of the time he just laid back and made the rest of the band sound great.

He played a Zon bass of somekind - laminated hardwood natural finish, dual soapbars. I saw no amp, I think he just used the monitors and mains.

I always like to check out those veteran acts, the ones that have been working steadily since their "hit" way back when. Good stuff!

That sounds great, too bad you didn't get to hear them play Funky Stuff that is a classic bass line simple and Funky as it gets.

Cool video a lot o funky stuff.

If I remember the record had like two or three tracks of bass. The main line and one or two tracks of little fills here and there. The live video looked like there was two bass players. Kool doing the high part of the line and the guy in the back left with the blue bass playing the low part that hits those upbeats with the bass drum. I love to go hear them looks like it would be a big partay.

Their bass player is awesome. Did some stuff with Jimmy Cliff back in the '80's too.
