The Krist Novoselic Thread

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys with the popularity of the Mike Dirnt thread, i'd thought i would make a Krist Novoselic thread....

so what does everyone think of Krist? or atleast thought of Krist?

Most of you remember the early 90's when Nirvana were in their prime... what does everyone think of his style, tone, and playing?

I was a huge nirvana fan, but my only recollection of him was that he was about 4 feet taller than the rest of his band, and he hit himself in the head with his bass.

I hated his tone and I'm not so sure about his style and playing, I just remember F G# A# C#.

Extraordinarily underrated player.
Six foot seven, IIRC.

Good live performer, great, in-the-pocket playing, nice tone.
-thumbs up-

hehe... yes, one SNL I'll never forget.

I love Nirvana myself, so I'd say Krist is OK. Just OK.

It was the MTV Music Awards actually

He did some nice basslines from time to time, Lithium is one that springs to mind in which he wasn't just playing the root. Lounge Act was a pretty cool one too.

I would have corrected you, but I didn't want to admit that I had watched an MTV awards show.

Bad tone, sub-par playing, just a lame player imo!

He's probably one of my favorite if not favorite "traditional" players, traditional being the guy that just sits in the background and soley provides the groove. His bass lines are what made Nirvana what it was more than almost anything else besides Cobain's voice.

Why the use of the past tense by the topic poster? Is he dead now?

When I was younger, I loved Nirvana. Cobain was why I started playing guitar. that said, I always liked the bass line in Lithium for the descending scale. I hadn't really paid that much attention to his playing much though, but i feel that he was in the perfect spot playing bass for Nirvana, and was great at what he did.
Plus he was pretty silly sometimes, hah and I liked his T-Bird

He was a perfect fit for Nirvana's music. He had cool fills, some cool lead lines.

I always enjoyed the bass in "Lounge Act." I think he is underrated as well.

I worked with a girl who used to be Krist's girlfriend back before they got popular (she said his Russian mom hated her and wanted to kill her), and she said that wasn't the first time Krist had hit himself in the head with his bass. She said he did it quite a few times, and he was extraordinarily clumsy but loved to jump around onstage and do stuff like that. Watching him play, I believe it.

Bass playing skill...not the best. Fit Nirvana perfectly, though. If they had more bassist than him, it wouldn't have worked out.

I cut my teeth playing Nirvana bass lines...that was punk rock in 1992 so sloppy or not, it was the best thing my 13 year old mind had heard. The first few notes of Blew or Lounge Act still make me want to grab my bass and play along.
