i would use effects very gingerly. krist's tone was relatively clean for the type of music and pedals he used.

Depends what era Albums like bleach used all sorts of interesting distortions, while In Utero was relatively clean and dark. That's the usual problem w/ questions like this..

Send a message via MSN to AndysRipper
He used a 76 Gibson Ripper for the best Nirvana bass lines, I have the same one. You have to put the chicken switch on 1 and use max tone and volume, then on the amp put the tone up high and a bit of compression AND USE A PICK.

Thats how you get it

Note: Gibson rippers are hard to obtain, but there is an epi copy

Good luck

Yeah, it depends on which sound because it is different from Bleach to Nevermind to In Utero.
I read that on Nevermind he played thru an older Fender Twin Reverb (tube) - go figure!
Later I think he used a modified Hiwatt (In Utero?).
I think he used his old Jazz copy on Bleach.
I think he used the Ripper on Nevermind.
Not sure about In Utero though I've seen a pic from those sessions where he's playing a Warwick thru a Trace Elliot.
He also seemed to pull that black Jazz copy out a lot in the later years too.

Generally speaking he had an agressive rotosound roundwound kind of tone. He has great feel. I think he an Dave Grohl were a fabulous rhythm section.
One thing is Krist sounds like turned his pick a little sideways to get a scraping sound that added a good grindy punk edge. Unlike a lot of punk players Krist picked up and down (not just downstrokes). Also, because he wore his base SO low, he didn't pick back towards the bridge - he picked more in the middle and towards the neck. I think that helped round out his trebly tone.
