Kyle Brock

So I busted out my DVD of Eric Johnson playing on Austin City Limits from 1988 last night. It's been a while since I listened to it but going through each song I began to remember how killer Kyle Brock is and how great of a sound he gets from that jazz bass. Check it out sometime if you get a chance. Kyle's licks, solos, and chords mixed with his tone makes for some enjoyable listening. (and Eric Johnsons not that bad either) . And checkout his Seymour Duncan/Hiwatt/mystery cab rig too.

One of my favorite bassists of all time. His tone is killer, and his playing is always melodic, emotive, and perfect for the song. Even though he is usually quite restrained most of the time, he's got some incredible chops. He never got anywhere near the recognition he deserved.

Check his solo at "eas west" at austin live . alway makes my jaws open. I would never trade that solo to any fast, says-nothing monster bassists solo of too much bassist from now. That solo is just the "right" ending for such remarkable song. He rellay captures the mojo of thta sound. Maybe the reason WHY maybe the best guitar player in the world still plays with himĦĦĦĦ

Where Is he now?

Much respect for Kyle down here in Austin, Texas, always wondered if the pedal he used was delay or chorus to sweeten up his solo's. I went out and bought leather pants only to discover they were hot as hell to perform in.

Absolutely! I was in a Texas fusion band called Aurora at the same time and we worked the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Carnaby's and Damien's in Houston at the same time. They are legendary. I actually have their first LP on the original vinyl on EGM Records (I believe it's the second pressing). I'm scared to go on Ebay and see what that's going for....

On top of everything else, Kyle is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I had a lesson or two from him back in the mid-seventies, and he even cut my hair once!
At any rate, he always seemed to find time to talk to anyone that was seriously interested in music. And he was a great player even then.

I remember a couple of us driving from Austin down to San Marcos to see them play at some beer joint. I can't recall if they were still the Electromagnets then, or if they had already become the Eric Johnson Group; it was right around the time they changed...

Kyle absolutely dominated in the late 70's. the zenith was the Eric Johnson group. I saw them a few times between 79-81. unbelievable. it was aggressive fusion with wonderful ragged edges. Kyle mostly played a 57 P with J pu added. 200 watt hiwatt heads with a 4x12, and what he told me was an 18" in a 412 enclosure. he used an echoplex and a maestro bass brassmaster. amazing sound and concept. one of my biggest influences.
