Hi guys,
I'd really like to know what Nick Olivieri and Scott Reeder use to get that great sound out. Can anyone tell me something about it? I mean basses, amps and even pedals (if they use them).

i have had the chance to see nick olivieri live 4 times and i had the chance to interview him and Josh homme twice. his sound is not so hard to achieve. all the time i have seen hom live he used a white Squier (!) precision bass, a no name old tube head with 2 channels. set the drive high for the hot and overdriven sound. i duplicate his sound with a P bass, a hughes and kettner tubeman plus and an old eko all tube head to a generic cab. that's nothing esoteric about that, it's rock'n roll. he uses to play with a pick but i have seen playing with fingers too. you can have the same sound with a fender sounding bass, a good overdrive pedal and playing at high volume.

Kyuss rule.

From the CDs I've got, and the times I've seen QOTSA live I'd agree he's using some manky old tube amp and a old bass - in true rocker style...

Yeah, I read an interview with Olivieri where he said the most he'd ever spent on a bass is $100, which is pretty cool considering the sound he gets out of it.

When I saw QOTSA at the Astoria in London back in Nov 2000, I noticed that Nick's cabinets faced each other at a slight angle off parrallel, and had a big fat condenser mic shoved between them. There has to be something scientific going on because I have heard Josh, the guitarist, talk about phasing his guitar by playing with cab positions.
Nick's sound was very growly and didn't have much air to it. That creates the illusion of deep bass.

... personally I dont think we really captured the stoner vibe in our demo... and it's a shame.

I'm really interested in hearing Kyuss. I've getting into stoner metal latley (I have cds by Sleep, Monster Magnet, and Cathedral) and I understand they are like the grandfathers of the genere.

Actually, Kyuss are more like the fathers. Black Sabbath are the grandfathers.

You should definitely get "Blues For The Red Sun" then, its such a killer album. "Thumb" is one of my favourite rock songs ever.

Listening to some pink floyd (60/70) and some led zep or black sabbath, i realized how much Kyuss are great!

check out stonerrock.com they have a store there as well... pretty cool site...but they really aren't open to things beside "stoner rock" if you will...check out high on fire matt pikes new band...well somewhat new...there 1st full length art of self defense is my favorite album....ever....
