Ditto!

On a kind of related note, how do you go about getting your bass to sound like Mr E does here: http://tinyurl.com/kh9yz (yep, it's the 5:15 clip again). His strings look like rubber bands and it's distorting for England. I realise that having a large amount of talent in the first place helps!

Does anyone know whether there's a DVD of this performance? I've seen various ones of The Who @ The Albert Hall but don't want to risk buying in case this isn't on it.

Cheers,
James

Well in that case....

it'll be this one: http://tinyurl.com/fs22z. I hope so - I'm about to buy it based on a reviewer mentioning the 5:15 bass solo.

Thanks mate!

Cheers,
James

I had the good fortune to see Entwistle in Atlantic City on the "Left For Dead" solo tour just about 1-2 years before he past. That was by far the LOUDEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY WHOLE LIFE. It was like sitting right next to a jet aircraft engine at full throttle for a hour. I was maybe 20 feet away from him. My beer glass was shaking! My ears are still ringing. And yet, awesome!

I can't say it enough... Long live the Ox

He's using the Optima Gold strings like I have on my Jazz Deluxe FMT on my website. They're about $100/pop retail, but you can get them for about $60 on ebay.. The rest is pure talent and a distortion effect!

There is a good site for anything JE but I forget where it is.

As far as i remember, laterally he used a Warwick or Status Buzzard through prototype Trace Elliot preamps with Ashdown long throw cabs (not sure of his amps)

His amazing dexterity comes from playing, as far as I remember, trumpet and french horn. One helped develop his left hand the and the other, his right hand.

I'm trying out Optimas just now on my fretless. i got them from Thomann in Europe for £16 ($29). I'm not sure if they ship to the US or not

On a side note the "extras" on the DVD for The Kids Are Alright has two live songs, video and audio of the OX, him only, recorded from the soundboard.

Won't Get Fooled and Baba. Pretty cool stuff.

Just put a set of Maxima Golds on my Jazz bass. They look, feel and sound much better than the ageing Rotosound Swing Bass set which were on it before. It's a shame that the people who I ordered the Maximas from forgot to put the ounce of talent in with the strings which I needed to do the 5:15 solo!

Anyone in the UK, I can recommend www.stringsdirect.co.uk. I bought a set of Maximas for £32.95 and they arrived two days after I placed the order.

P.S. What's the difference between Optima and Maxima??

used to be called maxima, now the are called optima.. same strings.. I found a place in Germany too that sells them for about $35 us.. I ordred 6 sets since I have to pay $18 in shipping, they're due here in about a week.. I figure I'll keep them for my QMT since it's my "Gold Bling" bass... the tone is great, but they're more about the looks for me!

Wow!

Got my DVD of JE's masterclass today. It opened my mind to playing bass in ways I'd never thought of playing.

I watched the DVD of The Who and Friends at the Albert Hall afterwards. Seeing The Ox do his lines and solos after watching the Masterclass DVD, things began to click.

God rest your soul John Entwistle - thank you for giving me a target which I know will be difficult to reach, but I'm sure going to have a damn good time trying to!

for a quick run down of johns gear try here

http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/equipm...ear-74-85.html

but for a really quick run down here goes

an active bass (doesnt really need to be a buzzard but it helps) or at least a loud passive

get your local techie to get your strings as close to the frets as possible without any evil buzzes (it has been said only john could play his basses as he liked his strings on 'the other side of the frets')

simply put amp wise he used a bi amp system with his effects in the top end only leaving his bottom end clean to move the room/arena/earth maybe even the moon

ok amp wise he ran a stereo bi/tri amp rig of ashdown ABM pre amps with a crossover with the highs sent to either a digitech (tube) or yamaha rack effect unit feeding the stereo highs into 2X500 or 2X1000 watt poweramps (ashdown) into 4 2X12 ASS(acousticsound systems small uk company) cabs (later ashdown ASS cabs artist sig series i think), now the bottom was sent to 1000 watts into 2 2X15 ASS cabs (later ashdown ASS spider series)

a lot of people forget the most important thing about what john had and that was "pure genius" and he never stopped playing (unlike some big name bassists) he was always on tour or recording/mixing
