It's always a pleasure to discover a musician who clearly has chops up the ying-yang, yet only dispenses them in the service of the music. Very tasty, intelligent, solid player from what I heard; I must hear more! |

Check out this video -- A Portrait of Jaco Pastorius from iBass magazine -- The highlight, for me, is Laurence Cottle's very capable playing and elucidation of some of the features of Jaco's music. I actually learned something (did I mention his playing?) and it gave me hope for trying to tackle certain things on an unlined fretless (not trying to start that old debate -- mine just happens to be unlined and this just happens to come at a good time for me).
Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxqIbF4Pka8
I know this is an old thread, but I'm using the search function, dammit!
Edit: Looking at the video for Donna Lee on his site, it appears that his Wal fretless is, in fact, lined, albeit subtly.

If you feel like reading about how much of a positive influence he was, and has always been, on my playing and my life, you can read about it here: http://janekgwizdala.com/home/articl...amazing-thing/ |

Edit: Read it. Definitely worthwhile. I think when you get going in a career and get busy, busy, busy, it can be hard to give yourself the time and breathing space to develop. I can be hard to be aware of or open to opportunities for mentoring. I know that I feel that way sometimes. This piece is a good reminder.

Most down to earth "player" I've ever had the pleasure to meet. He sold me the CD in his car player..as he'd forgotten to bring any (wasn't his gig..just a pickup). | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
