One of my favorite movie soundtacks is from the 1974 Brian dePalma film Phantom of the Paradise. The music was written by Paul Williams and Leland Sklar played on it. The bass tone is awesome, just a very strong fundamental. Anybody know the soundtrack and have any ideas about what kind of gear he was using back then? It sounds kinda Rickerbackerish to me.

Lee's main recording bass is a percision body.
With a rosewood P-neck, shaped to a 62 Jazz bass.
Two reverse emg percision pickups, placed where jazz
pickup go.
Badass bridge.
Mandolin frets.

Thumbs up

I'd heard about this movie years ago and wanted to see it. After reading your post, I searched and found it in ten parts on Youtube!

Entertaining flick!

that movie also had a HUGE synth in it. this thing was gigantic. you could stand in the middle and there would be synth surrounding you on all sides. but, now for something bass-related. i dont remember the bass tone or anything about what the movie was about but i do remember it.

I loved that movie. Weird crap has always had the best basslines.

Yeah, that was a very famous modular. Of course it was only a prop in the movie. They had him playing piano on the synth keyboard Paul Williams was in Austin last summer at a screening of PotP and The Muppet Movie. I got my DVD cover autographed. I wanted him to sign it "Swan", and in blood, but reconsidered at the last minute.
