One of my favorites is 'Miscellaneous Debris' - Primus' EP of covers from way back in '92. I just dig it because of how raw the recordings are. It almost sounds like Les is going direct to tape, so you can hear every little nuance of his playing & technique.
But like I said, I think there's stuff to be learned from all of his recordings.

My fave is Col. Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains. With Buckethead on guitar and Bernie Worell on keys, there's more to love than just Les, |

The playing on this album is raw and aggressive unlike Primus albums that preceded it. For the classic Primus line up I'd recommend Suck On This, Seas Of Cheese and Frizzle Fry - heck all their stuff really
Some Claypool stuff is free from live concert sites such as this one http://bt.etree.org/ go check 'em out!

Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Purple Onion
Those are my favourites, but there is something to love in all the albums he's done. I liked his book quite a bit, too.
I feel dirty not including Frizzle Fry in that list because of the raw energy encased within. Marvelous stuff.

If I was starting out with Claypool, I'd go:
Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Suck on This
Pork Soda
Frizzle Fry
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains - Big Eyeball in the Sky
Not in any particular order, but that should be enough for you to fill your boots anyway |

Somehow all of Claypool's albums are so different yet similar, for all the reasons mentioned above. I would argue against Antipop, its the only Primus/Claypool album I really can't stand (except the song Lacquerhead).
Frizzle Fry, Seas of Cheese and Suck On This! are probably your best place to start, this is classic Primus and Claypool at his best. Brown Album is great, but alot different, I hated it at first but grew to love it. Pork Soda is dark and weird, actually introduced me to Primus, definitely worth getting. Then I'd go either Highball with the Devil (Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel), Oysterhead (Claypool and Trey Anastasio's collaboration), or the Sausage album (titled "Riddles are abound tonight", I think this is the original Primus lineup of Jay Lane, Claypool and Brain, before they started releasing albums...something like that) |
