I always found Lesh's tone to be a little more musical than Casady's--albeit considerably less viscerally pleasing. Past that, they're both pretty awesome, and in a very similar way playing-wise.

A little derail..... Peter, I've seen you post for years now, you ever think of writing for a bass magazine? Your taste seems to be very wide, I really think you would be great at it!!!!!!

Sorry...back to the thread.

I contain multitudes.

I would love to write for a music publication. Given that BP founder Jim Roberts edits Cornell's alumni magazine, maybe I have a little bit of an "in." (I think I'd have to start paying Cornell Alumni Association dues, though. ) On the other hand, considering that I will be writing and pontificating for a living as an academic, perhaps the world doesn't need any more Smug than it already has.

I just read this post more closely and I realized that my answer should have been Orlando Cepeda.

I'm a Phil fanatic so the answer's obvious for me. Jack Cassady never did much for me. Maybe I just need to check out more of his playing.

Btw, did anyone else see the setlist for the Phil and Friends (Scofield on guitar, Greg Osby on sax) show at the Warfield on 5/19?
WOW!

Whoa, that sounds like a killer lineup, Ron.

Sure does. I'm not sure if Osby played the whole show. He may have just sat in on Eyes (a la Branford).
Scofield has done a few shows with Phil's band now. I haven't gotten much of a chance to listen to them, just a fleeting glance really, but they sound very good.
I love that Scofield is so willing to venture out into these waters. For a guy that has made his name as a very serious jazz cat to cross-over into the jam scene without pretense does a lot to legitimize bands like Phil and Friends to the more insular parts of the jazz world.

Well, Ornette Coleman was into the Dead. On the other hand, he's hardly been part of the jazz mainstream since he started Prime Time in the '70s. I love how Stanley Crouch lauds him for his band with Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, and Ed Blackwell and then completely ignores the rest of his career. But that's a rant for another day...

Stanley Crouch, from what I've read, has a bit of a bug up his ass.

It's all Jack

Hooked at a tender age by Tuna, Jack is part of my freak-o-system, genetically I think. Phil's playing is beautiful but just never got me going the same way. Of the two, Jack is the "Willys in 4 wheel drive... "

could recommend a Tuna album?
just one.

I've got an insteresting show from '69, but it's a little too loose and protean jam-rock to really merit repeat listenings.

Live at Sweetwater... Burgers.....America's Choice?

I like both, but Casady's more of an influence on me personally.

If I had to choose, I'd say Jack Casady - because I've never listened to a lot of Grateful Dead, and because I've always liked Jack's more fiery, passionate style of play with the Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna...

I voted for Phil because I am much more familiar with the Dead than Hot Tuna or Jefferson Airplane. I could never get into the Airplane for some reason. The electric Hot Tuna stuff I've heard was great, but I find the Dead to be so much more musically satisfying.
