Lets talk about Kim Gordon!

The is my first thread on talkbass so I figured I would bring up probably my most influential bass player. How about that tone and those chunky tortured bass lines? Music to my ears... any other Kim fans out there?

I heard a good interview where she said a bass player should not be afraid to play repetitive 'boring' bass lines when song warrants it. Kim said that most players can't resist the urge to put fills and variations in and are incapable of thumping along on the root for an extended period.

My senior year in high school, Goo was my favorite record, and I surmised that if I could have been in ANY band and on ANY record, it would have been Sonic Youth 'Goo'. Kim is a sexy bass god.

Big SY fan right here, Kim's doing what needs to be done to keep the songs on the rails, stay out of the way of the frantic guitar work while keeping the songs pumping. Love her.

I heard they used something like 26 alternate guitar tunings on 'Goo'.

I used to try to play guitar along with SY cd's, but it was hopeless because of all the alternate tunings. I need more guitars

Love Kim - she plays a T-Bird. Their web sight is full of great info and tabs.

the tension that she creates by playing those "boring" lines is gut wrenching, when the song finally breaks away it creates such a feeling of relief. she is a testament to the idea that less is more

I'm going to take back what I said about that Kim Gordon interview - I just remembered it was the wrong Kim - it was Kim Deal who said that. Oops.

I put Kim In the Adam Clayton mode of bass playing.
Where the band sound, over-shadows her playing.
Solid, fits the song playing.
