I've been reading a book called Genderqueer. It's an anthology of stories of real people, putting to words things I haven't had words for. Finding words for myself has helped me a lot, and it's also spurred me to write about my situation, to make myself visible again - and maybe help other people find their own important words. So, I started a blog recently, which you can find here if you're interested.

I used to be here many years back and came out, it was both a positive and negative experience for me. There was still quite a bit of homophobia on here, especially from the USA members. The mods were very kind, and stopped a lot of it, but it was a feeling I got that not only made me leave this site, but also give up playing for a while.
I'm stoked to see a club now, and you know what? We don't want to discuss which bass player we would nail,do we??

Anyways, i am glad to see a strong LGBT community here and please know that you have "straight" friends here too.

Like everywhere else, TB has its share of homophobes. But on this thread you have friends who couldn't care less who you fall in love with or choose to be with, as long as it makes you happy.

Pffft to the homophobes! Honestly, in America, I firmly believe they're a dying breed. Kids these days don't seem to care nearly as much on the whole. None of my kids' friends care at all, for example. Certainly there's some still left, but I find there's less and less outward discrimination and more acceptance. They might goof on some of the clothing, but it's good natured

Besides, I want to hear what bass players you all want to nail. Feel free to name me, but just remember I'm married.

Not LGBT but an avid supporter for a long time. I would really like to share a story with you that I think you will find entertaining.

Let me give you some background first.

I originally come from and grew up in Athens, Greece. While growing up, the city was not particularly gay friendly, the rest of the country has some exceptions(Mykonos being traditionally the gay party island and the island of Lesvos,well, being the meeting point of lesbians and bisexual women in the summer).

However a lot of gay people living in Athens were hiding themselves from the public eye. Around the late 90's a lot of what we called "gay extremists" started to come out. This was a an almost violent reaction to all thses years of repression. Sure enough, there was resistance and it led to new wave of LGBT hate but it also allowed a lot of people to come out.

Around the end of this wave I left Athens to go to college. Every time I came back for holidays or to visit my family. It felt like that the gay community was getting more and more accepted and did not have to be as extreme as before which I found great.

My story has to do with a wonderful family friend. He is gay and what we consider, the old of guard of the community. Always on the front and always outspoken but very diplomatic. Currently he is in his middle 60's. While growing up all I could think is that he was the sweetest, funniest guy I knew (for some reason he was the only guy that could bring all the female friends of my mom in tears) and how well dressed he was(He owned a really high end place selling ties.)

As the years passed things became clear but after being exposed to him and some of his friend I didn't feel uncomfortable around him or his friends which also led me not feeling uncomfortable around any LGBT people. I wish I could explain how thankful to him and my parents are about this.

So at some point during highschool, a really cool funk band(I don't remember the name, but it included some guys that played with prince and no, they weren't Time) was playing this club I have never heard of in my life that not that far from my place. So I got a friend and went together. When we got there, I noticed there was mostly guys in the place and all of them really well dressed. But something was off. Went to get a drink at the bar but as I turned around I ran into the friend of my parents. He was very suprised and excited to see me there. The reason was that the bar was a gay bar and also he assumed that my friend was actually my partner. After explaining that this was not the case and that we were there just to see the band he was actually excited that we were interested in the bar.

Needless to say, went on to bring a lot of cool bands and we bacame regulars. Actually we were some of the very few non LGBT visiting the bar quite often and this is where I really got to appreciate this community. Unfortunately the bar closed down some years ago, mostly due to regular complaints of people that were not particularly happy of having an LGBT bar in their neighbourhood.

Actually coming from a Rock and heavy metal back ground I had a lot of friends that were not particularly comfortable with LGBT people but after taking them to this place and introducing them to some of the people there most of them felt bad about how ignorant and wrong they were. Living proof that music can bridge any gap

Even though I don't live in Athens anymore, I know things are getting better and I really hope that one day things will be as good or even better than in the city I live in now, Berlin. Unfortunately I really don't see this happening any time soon, especially after the last elections, when a neo-nazi party managed to get elected in the parliament.

Today is the International Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Here in Helsinki, we gathered in the already darkening afternoon and lit candles to the memory of transgender people murdered by transphobic persons in 2011. There weren't too many of us gathered before the Parliament House, but the Finnish Minister for Culture and Equality took part, which is a very good sign. We fight fear with love, and love will win, eventually.

I would ask for a moment's silence for those people, if it's possible on an online forum.
