Looking for good fusion/jazz/ or just plain funky

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry if this thread has been done, hard to tell until search is back up.
I'm looking to broaden my musical horizons in the fusion or jazz categories. How about some suggestions for albums with alot of groove in that department? Side projects by talented bassists?
I really dig Jaco and Marcus and stanley clark stuff. Turn me on to something cool.

Go to www.live365.com, set up a free new account, and type in a search for funk. You will probably get a couple of hundred stations to listen to free.

I've really been into the Christian McBride Band lately. I picked up their three disc live CD "Live at Tonic". Great stuff!

Dave Grossman's band Unpronounceable.
Miles Davis' Panagea

I fully believe that Panagea is the best fusion album ever.

SpyroGyra is a neat blend of jazz and "near funk". Scott is a Great bassist.

Gary Willis-
Tribal Tech's albums
Willis' solo albums, No Sweat & Bent

Fima Ephron-
Screaming Headless Torsos' debut album & Live In NYC. Bonus points for the 2-DVD set.
Ephron's solo disc, Soul Machine...Klezmer-Jazz-Funk
Ephron's other bands-
Lost Tribe...'90s Fusion
Hasidic New Wave...IMO, they can souynd a bit like early Weather Report meets Bitches Brew-era meets Hendrix.

Oteil Burbridge-
His debut solo disc, Love Of A Lifetime

Jimmy Haslip-
The early Yellowjackets' albums, on a whole, may be more 'Fusion-y' & 'funky' than the later releases.
Also Haslip's recent trio thing, Jing-Chi.

Alphonso Johnson's early solo albums from the '70s Fusion era have been re-issued domestically.

There's also Jeff Berlin's solo discs + the stuff he did with Kazumi Watanbe (the '80s Spice Of Life band with Bill Bruford).

Tommy Kennedy-
The trio stuff w/ Billy Connors & the later stuff with Dave Weckl.

Jimmy Johnson's stuff with Alan Holdsworth's I.O.U. band (Metal Fatigue or IOU Live) or Chad Wackerman's two solo releases.

Jean-Luc Ponty is the man. If you want some more funky type JLP, check out his first album, Upon the Wings of Music. Great playing on bass and just about every instrument.

If you're looking for some crazy wankage fusion, check out his album Enigmatic Ocean.
