I've known Scott it seems like forever. Now that you put up the link I've heard it before. He's a great player and I'd rather not dissect this in this forum
I'll leave it at that. |

By all means like what you like. |

For me, I listen to and play so many different styles of music that when I do come around to funk styles, it's always fresh for me. Now if I had to listen to a whole cd or a concert of nothing but slap funk in E, yeah, I think I would get tired of it real quick. Also for me, it's about being creative and not retreading the same old slap grooves. I was exaggerating about Scotts piece there as I know it's a pretty simple slap groove line but the feel of it is what does it for me. You can feel his heart in his work. That is why I think Scott is one of the finest bassists in the world. IMO of course. |

I agree. I've been lucky enough to know and hear him all these years. That's why I don't want to say anything that might even resemble a critique of a fine bassline that fits that song.
In addition, he makes one heckuva bass. I've had an Ambush for about a month now and it's insane how easily this bass lets me do my thing. Highly, highly recommended. |

Gard was telling me about Ambush basses the last time I saw him. I know little about them. (Especially what they look like) Do you have a pic of it that you can show me?

First up Louis Johnson is a killer player, without doubt there are funkier and more technical players out there, but like someone pointed out, when he was laying down a lot of the BJ stuff it was purley for the sake of the groove not to keep us bassists entertained! His session credits are testimony to his ability, I think there's a list at the end of one of his vids!
Stomp is in G minor on the album but I've seen him do it in F on another video, the verse line is probably as funky as it gets and soooo simple as is the end section with the slide thing going on.
The Scott ambush clip is cool, gotta check that album out, proves a good "slap" in E is still valid. One of the things I learnt from LJ many years ago was how to get the same kind of groove you get in E, with the left hand slaps, going in other keys, by fretting the note over the top of the neck with your thumb and slapping with your fingers in front of the note, it proved to be a valuable lesson back in the day for me but hard work on anything with a neck wider than 4 string Jazz bass!
